Things to do in York with the kids?

Kids are 9&6 so too young for the dungeons. Is there anything else they may enjoy other than the museum?

York maze is my DDs favourite, it’s due to re-open in 2 weeks and is a brilliant day out. It’s not far from the city and there’s a bus that stops right outside if needed

I'd forgotten about the maze - yes our children loved this!

@SummerHouse we may well have been there at the same time. 9ft unicycle, flaming torches, blindfold?

SummerHouse · 29/06/2022 17:49

@ZarquonsSandals that's the one! I had to turn my back at one point. I literally couldn't watch him without screaming "won't somebody stop him for God's sake!!!"

Absolutely an amazing, funny, talented, terrifying show.

We have been to York twice and he was there both times. The second time i saw him out the window whilst on the chocolate story tour. I was a bit gutted we were stuck on the tour and missing him... 😅

The city walls map is below - my kids loved hunting for the masons marks as we walked www.yorkwalls.org.uk/?page_id=3690

I believe from relatives that street entertainers are strictly controlled in York ie you can't just go out busking with your guitar.

You have to have a license and your "show" vetted by the Council to see if you're good enough and then prime slots are allocated in the major squares.

I think it's a good thing because you get some cracking performances hence my comment below about it being a great city to just walk about and see what you come across.

I've listened to some seriously talented musicians and entertainers over the years!

Oh, you can just go out busking. DD and her friends sometimes go busking for an hour or so on a sunny Saturday and then spend the money on lunch and shopping.

There used to be a big kids play area at Homestead Park. Is it still there?

Can anyone in York tell me if the race course is walkable from the train station? Or is there a bus that runs on a Sunday to there?

GiantCheeseMonster · 02/07/2022 18:03

Jorvik is overpriced for what you get. If you can get Clubcard points to do it for free, go for it, but it’s not worth the full-price ticket IMO.

The Castle Museum is amazing and easily fills most of a day. Top it off with a Ghost Tour (not as scary as the Dungeon) and/or a whizz round the Railway Museum and you’ll have a great time. York is fabulous.

Incidentally I used to live there and worked in the city centre, so got friendly with a busker - a chap who would wheel a piano into the square outside Betty’s and play Andrew Lloyd Webber hits and that kind of thing. He told me he easily made £100 a day in the summer, mostly from Japanese/American tourists. That was twenty years ago, so I’m sure they must get considerably more than that now.

We took our kids (7 and 4) to web adventure park and they LOVED it! You could easily spend the whole day there.
