Making friends as an adult? I need tips

So I'm 35 and have 2 small kids. There are a few mums at nursery who I have light conversations with. They seem nice and normally the kind of people I would be friend with. Also a few new neighbours etc. What I need help with is taking it from chats at the school gate to something more. I know a few of them are new to the town and potentially 'needing' friends too. One mum actually asked if we fancied a play date sometime. What's the etiquette with such things? I know I sound ridiculous!! Thank you for any advice.

If you feel confident enough, you could just ask one of the mums you're chatting to if they want to go to local park or playground after nursery with DC one day.
Text the mum who mentioned a playdate if you have her number, or just say next time you see her - "I was wondering if you'd like to come over for a playdate? Could you do Mon/Tues/ whenever...?"
It's difficult and I think you have to be a bit forward.
