After the news of the horrendous explosion in Birmingham that tragically killed a woman I was wondering if anyone knew of any way to detect if your home is in danger of a gas explosion other than physically smelling gas? We don't live very far away and its an area that apparently has lots of gas leak type incidents.
I suffer from an anxiety disorder that manifests in all sorts of ways but one of the things I'm very afraid of is gas leaks/explosions/carbon monoxide poisoning etc. We live in a run down, rented home with an ancient boiler the LL isn't bothered about replacing as it still works fine in general. We did insist on a gas safety check last year but the LL always sends one of his 'mates' over, he's certified and everything but only ever spends five to ten minutes here which I'm not sure is long enough to make sure all is ok.
Is there anything proactive someone can do to avoid these sorts of tragedies other than having a carbon monoxide alarm (which I'm sure doesn't actually detect gas leaks though I might be wrong).
