Scam calls on my iphone, is there a way to stop it?

I have been receiving scam calls every day for a few months now. They begin at 7am and persist, sometimes hourly, until 8pm in the evening. They are always calling from Manchester or London, and usually begin with 020 or a variation that is similar.

On the occasion that I have picked up, they either disconnect or put the phone down when I ask what company they represent. I repeatedly blocked the numbers but they just call back with a slightly modified one.

How can I do something about this, it is taking over my enjoyment of my phone and I am keeping the ringer off. Thanks to this I have missed a couple of family emergencies Sad

Blocking isn't a solution, but is there a way to get rid of them without changing my number? I am with virgin mobile and my package is otherwise great.

Hi, can someone explain the TPS thing, the site isn't making sense to me? Thanks:)

If you don't want to change the number

  1. stop answering the phone. Check what number has called you and if it's someone you recognise call them back. Put voicemail on. I've never had one of these nusiance callers leave a message.
  2. Don't give your number unless it is absolutely essential. You're often asked to enter it on forms when it really is not necessary. Read small print and make sure you're not permitting an organisation to contact you by phone. I've been very careful with my mobile numbers and never had any nusiance calls on them.
I have TPS and BT blocker on my landline. Go to TPS website to register. Virgin will also let you block anonymous callers but in my experience it's not much use. You wind up blocking genuine calls from some switchboards. You can relieve your feelings by complaining to TPS about calls, but that only works if they are from UK organisations and not cowboys. The only thing I found to work was option1 - stop answering the phone! I reckon it takes up to a month after you stop answering for them to stop calling. As soon as you start answering , they start up again.

It is illegal for UK businesses to make unsolicited sales and marketing calls to you if you register with TPS. TPS is the public body that enforces the law. If you look on their website under ENFORCEMENT you will see that they have fined businesses huge amounts .Unfortunately lots of nusiance calls aren't from legitimate UK businesses. If you look at TPS Website under INFORMATION - Nusiance Calls,it explains what they don't deal with and who to complain to about other calls.

Thanks so much for your advice. These seem to be coming from the UK but god knows. To be honest it is much longer than a month, and each time i block one they come back later with an altered digit.
They sure don't seem to give up!

I will probably see what my phone can do - to allow the ringer for known callers only.

either of the above should work. I use the top one, Dh uses the bottom way.

This is great, i will go for the first one, to silence unknown callers. I don't get many anyway - thanks!

Damn for some reason 'silence unknown callers' isnt on my phone! I have iphone 6.
I do have 'call blocking' but it only shows who i have blocked, no options to silence future calls.

@mellatronella Then use the one my Dh uses and allow your contacts list to come through. Same result.

I once got ten in one day. I just changed the setting so that if a phone number wasn’t in my address book it goes straight to voicemail.

If someone called and didn’t leave a number - I’d Google it and see if it’s someone I wanted/needed to speak to or call them with my number hidden and block them if it turned out to be a call centre.

its a lot better now.

LondonQueen · 25/06/2022 19:06

I have "silence unknown callers" turned on, just worth remembering that unless they're in your contacts it won't ring, can be a pain with the dentist, kids school or work etc.

Thanks everyone.
It seems the info for silencing calls is for IOS 14 and upwards, my phone is only up to date at IOS 12. I am clueless about stuff like this.
But i am sure i once used this on my old iphone 4!

Will check out the link and have another look at my settings:)
