Bailiffs calling for previous occupant

We’ve lived in our property for over 10 years. Prior to this it was a rental property and when we moved in we would occasionally get mail for the previous occupant. I would always return to sender.

It has recently started happening again so I sent them back to the sender. One came from a debt company saying they are going to send bailiffs to the property. The bailiffs came today while we were at work and left a note. Can anyone give me any advice on what we should do? Should I call the bailiffs? I’m hesitant to give them my personal details. Wait for them to come again? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

We had this at a previous property. We called them and for the ones who came to the property we just showed them a council tax bill to prove we lived in the property.

I was never hesitant to give them personal details. They aren't interested in my details they just need to know the person they are looking for doesn't reside at the property.

Well obviously you are not liable for someone else's debts. Just let them see a council tax bill.

I called them when this happened to me, the bailiffs were lovely actually, they took a few details like move in dates and a contact phone number but never called back

We had this too, at a previous house. We showed them our rental agreement showing when we moved in, & some ID. Never had anything further.

This is reassuring. Thank you all for the advice. I’ll give them a call.

Yes we had some call when we moved in, unfortunately they discussed with the neighbour that we owned money, which was untrue.

I had this in a previous home too. I showed them photo ID and they went as it was clear it wasn't me they were after

I had this too, so I called them. Initially they were quite aggressive, demanding to know why they'd been sent if the previous tenant was no longer there 🙄 Like PPs, they asked for a council tax bill (also photo ID) and went away no problems.

You just call them and provide them with proof of tenancy or that you own the property. They shouldn't bother you again

When we moved into our current house we had some men turn up looking for the previous owners. The men were very tall with black suits and sunglasses. I wasn’t actually sure if they were bailiffs or the mafia 😎.
Fortunately DH and I are a different ethnicity to previous owners but we did get a bit of a scare.
