White noise machine with continuous play

veneeroftheyear · 22/06/2022 16:00

Can anyone recommend a white noise machine for 10 year old ds who struggles to sleep when it's completely quiet. We want one that will play continuously rather than shut off after 20 minutes like some of the ones for babies.

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for white noise machine recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best white noise machines page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their kids. We hope you find it useful.

Hi, we just use an old iPad or phone in their room playing white noise on an app- white noise baby it’s called. Stays on all night.

Feeellostindirection · 22/06/2022 16:05

We play rain sounds on Alexa on a loop, goes all night.

AcceptYourself · 22/06/2022 16:05

The Dreamegg is good. Think we got ours from Amazon

We use an FM radio that's not tuned in to give a fuzzy sort of white noise for our DS.
He had a white noise bear when he was a baby which worked for him but I got fed up buying batteries. Radio replaced it but we are struggling to get him to let that go!

DS has a little machine from Amazon, was under £10. Gives a nice deep sound rather than the more tinny sound from some of the toy type ones. There are also different sounds to choose from

I have a marpac (sp) one. It's like a fan that runs continuously. It's brilliant.

BrownHairedQuirk · 22/06/2022 16:28

I just use a fan but when it’s not hot I don’t have it facing me, works a treat!

This is exactly what we do too and it would be much more versatile for a 10 year old than just a white noise machine.

Alexa has a sleep sounds app and it has absolutely loads of white noise options so it's also much more likely he will find a suitable one which works for him if the generic white noise sound isn't effective.

Thanks for suggestions everyone. We don't have Alexa but I see there are various machines on Amazon which play a range of sounds, like rain, sea etc. I think he might like that. Can anyone recommend a particular machine like that?

dream egg!

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 22/06/2022 17:39

Does your child have tinnitus?
I didn't know I had it until my twenties.
I thought the sounds I kept hearing were normal. Sounds like a high pitched , continuous squeal .
It had never occurred to me that silence was , actually, silent.

pointythings · 22/06/2022 17:51

I just have a micro stereo with a USB containing nature sound downloads I've chosen, just turn it on and hit the repeat button twice and you're done.

flapjackfairy · 22/06/2022 17:56

I have the lectrofan one ( several actually ). It is a hexagonal shape and I find it brilliant .

GiltEdges · 22/06/2022 17:57

We have a Yoto player and use the white noise sounds on that. Plays continuously through the night.

wibblewobbleball · 22/06/2022 18:02

Not that I'm aware of. He is autistic though and seems to need constant low level noise.

@veneeroftheyear my son is the same. Without white noise he'd wake every time one of his siblings gets up to use the bathroom. He's really sensitive to it.

Albgo · 22/06/2022 20:57

This one is great.

Search for white noise machine on Amazon. It’s an actual thing! I think I’ve got the small hexagaonal one mentioned above that you just plug in.

BiteyShark · 22/06/2022 21:09

I use lectrofan
