Maggot bin invasion HELP!

Just opened bin and it’s a white moving mass all over, never seen anything like it before (we’re just now renting in a town and bin is in very shaded dark place, does that create ideal conditions or something?

it’s a brown bin for food and green waste, not getting emptied until next week and we have no hose or anything or else I’d just be hosing it down already.

how do I manage this? The odd one doesn’t normally bother me at all, but this is like something from a horror show.

oh dear we had this!! It was horrendous!!!

I'm afraid you are going to need to get a hose. We pulled the bin out onto the pavement and hosed them directly down the drain. Once all out, we bleached the bin. All sorted.

Ask a neighbour!

meloncolic · 23/06/2022 18:19

I have BOUGHT THE HOSE!

Once it’s emptied on Monday I will wash and bleach.

2 big tubs of table salt. And smother them. Itll help till Monday and loads of bleach
Look at. Local wheelie bin cleaning companies.
We pay 3.95 4 weekly to have it blasted and disinfected.
I would normally do it. But hose is out back and if i take it out there and clean my youngest wants to splash in the water!

teafor1 · 23/06/2022 20:04

I poured a kettle worth of boiling water into it and poured it down the outside drain! Maggot soup. 🤢

Ejk1990 · 23/06/2022 20:16

We just had loads on our driveway. But none in the bin, so I'm stumped!

Just been out with the kettle, brush and the hose! So gross!

This thread is making me ill🤢

florianfortescue · 23/06/2022 20:19

I left mine with the lid open and the birds got them all!

Pedallleur · 23/06/2022 20:28

It's just fly eggs hatching out into larvae. The rotting food, garden waste and heat is the dream for flies. Stop flies getting in and you've no maggots but that's not easy.

Bunnyfuller · 23/06/2022 20:36

We had this but worse - a neighbours bin grew the fuckers AND FOR SOME REASON THEY CRAWLED TO OUR HOUSE AND IN UNDER THE FRONT DOOR.

Never was so much bleach seen and used

100problems · 23/06/2022 20:42

Spray inside bin with Raid and close lid tight. After it's empty fill with bleach and boiling water, close lid and slush it around.

Elderflower14 · 23/06/2022 20:48

Now you have the hose clean it out, bleach it and spray with fly spray....Also double bag the rubbish bags! We had to do it twice last year before our bin was emptied... Beyond vile!! 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/06/2022 20:48

To avoid in future, securely bag all food waste, and especially, keep any bits of meat or fish in a bag in the freezer until the night before the bin men come.
Bluebottles can apparently smell anything dead (I,e, meat or fish) from a mile away!

I've just taken the dog for a pee and when Iv walked back in my garden there are a thousand fuckers in the centre of my path??!
Four slabs away from brown bin
Four slabs away from the door
They've gathered on two slabs between
I am FREAKING out

I went out with 1.5ltr of bleach, 4 kettles of boiling water and scrubbed them back and fourth with a hard brush and pushed them onto the stones at the side. Then when I saw them rising from the dead I've been out with a big bottle of salt
I've just looked out upstairs window and they're ganging up again heading towards my door. How do I protect my house?

I've just woken DP up whos only contribution was 'salt won't help' took his contacts out and went to sleep

Any update op? My bins aren't due for cleaning until the next cycle and it doesn't look like they're coming from there anyway...

I'll have DP borrow a neighbour's hose tomorrow. I've run out of bleach and hot water

FirstFallopians · 26/06/2022 01:00

Order a flamethrower off the dark web. The only rational response.

What do you have decomposing under your driveway?

Ionianprincess · 26/06/2022 01:03

Won’t they just turn into flies and fuck off?

MarmiteCoriander · 26/06/2022 01:16

We had this last week. DH took it upon himself, after a google search, to pour bleach then a kettle of boiled water into to the bin. Then out came plumes of gas/steam who knows what? Confused

I assumed he'd then tip it into a bag for the larger, wheelie bin, but no. He left it for the bin men to empty, despite weighing a tonne! They did, and then it was hosed out and cleaned.
