This wouldn't be for a holiday, but I can't find relevant section to post this under, and it doesn't really matter what the reason is anyway.

Would you travel to Riga (Latvia) in September?

I thought I had posted in 'holidays', but did click on the Topic menu so maybe scrolled off somewhere.

Yes, why wouldn’t you?
The Art Nouveau architecture is stunning.

I don't understand the question. Why would you not travel to Latvia in September? The weather?

Because it shares a border with Russia.

Because it shares a border with Russia.

So does Norway. And Finland. And Poland and China.

Again, what is the issue?

TheOrigRights · 20/06/2022 17:04

Oh alright....you clearly can't understand why someone might be wary of travelling to a country neighbouring one at war.
I think you know why I'm asking, so you could simply say "yes, I would travel there, I don't share your concerns".
You don't need to be patronising.

Half the world borders a country at war, at least.

Get a grip

PandoraP · 20/06/2022 17:06

Yes I would travel there. I have just been to Poland and I am going to Norway next month. It would not even cross my mind not to go.

Intothewoodland · 20/06/2022 17:17

You've had some quite rude answers. My Latvian friend is worried about her home country. She is of Russian descent though.

To answer your question, yes, I would travel there. But I've seen something about Lithuania blocking trains to Russia today so might have to keep an eye on what's happening.

Dozycuntlaters · 20/06/2022 17:27

Yes, you'll be fine. My brother lives in Riga, there are more nato soldiers at the border, they feel perfectly safe for now.

Why do you need to be so aggressive?

Frezia · 20/06/2022 17:35

I work with Latvian and Lithuanian organisations, nobody seems particularly concerned. In fact we are organising a large scale international event in Vilnius in November, everyone seems pretty excited.

Where's the aggression exactly?

Chaoslatte · 20/06/2022 18:58

Yes I would. Russia has their hands full with Ukraine as it is, they don’t have enough troops to start attacking random other neighbours. And surely it would be Georgia next anyway.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 20/06/2022 19:00

I am in fact travelling there in August and flying back the first weekend of September. No concerns at all.

Arenanewbie · 20/06/2022 19:06

Yes, I would, I completely understand your concern but Baltic counties are members of NATO, it changes everything.
By the way I don’t think that Georgia is next, Moldova’s position is much weaker

@Arenanewbie I think they still have troops in South Ossetia and Abkhazia don’t they?

Arenanewbie · 20/06/2022 19:29

you are right, completely forgot about this.I still would go to Latvia because of its NATO status.
I wouldn’t speak Russian in Latvia though.
