How do you chase up someone who hasn’t replied to you?

curiousitygotthebetterofme · 20/06/2022 14:45

For example, I messaged one of my bosses last week to ask him about something and he read it but still hasn’t replied to me.

would it be passive aggressive to copy the original message, paste it and send it again?

or how would you try to get a response?

'Hi x any update on xx. Thanks.'

Sirzy · 20/06/2022 14:47

“Hi just wondering if you had had a chance to action x as per my email last week?”

MissyCooperismyShero · 20/06/2022 15:17

And failing the above, send another saying ' Hi manager, as I haven't heard from you re xyz, and I really need to get on with it, I will be doing ABC, which I hope is ok with you. Happy to hear from you if that's not the case. Then do whatever seems reasonable to you.

balalake · 20/06/2022 15:19

Phone call, assuming in person is not easy or an option.

TeeBee · 20/06/2022 15:31

I always send chase emails with 'Just a gentle reminder...'

Shitscared123 · 20/06/2022 15:40

I sent a “gentle reminder” one, which made me cringe as it was anything but that, however, the people concerned replied within minutes.

My colleague who has balls of steel puts in the subject heading “Reminder number x: task”. I think she’s got to reminder number 5 with one person.

Hope you have a new job lined up.

(Hoping this on behalf of your colleagues)

VirginiaQ · 20/06/2022 16:04

Oh hate the 'gentle' reminder. Why do you need to put the word 'gentle' in? It's like those signs which say ''Polite' notice (although they actually want you to read it as 'police'.

I just forward the original e-mail and say something along the lines of, 'I know you're very busy but have you a chance to look at this?' Sometimes I will add that I can't do 'x' without their reply.

Never had any issues with that.

BackToTheTop · 20/06/2022 16:05

Reply to you last email 'hi, have you had chance to look at the below? Deadline date is x or I need to hey back x to x on this by x date'

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 20/06/2022 16:07

A gentle reminder makes me cringe. Please don’t use that.

Mamette · 20/06/2022 16:11

“Hi X, have you had a chance to review xyz”

It’s not exactly groundbreaking or ideal but I struggle with this, mainly because I have a self-imposed rule against “just wondering”.

Hell no to the gentle reminder and I always mentally shuffle that task to the bottom of my to do list when I am a gentle reminder recipient.

Pancakeorcrepe · 20/06/2022 16:45

Oh no! I have mentioned gentle reminders and kind reminders, in an attempt to be polite, I had no idea this is pissing off all sorts of people!

LadyApplejack · 20/06/2022 17:00

I'll be along the lines of "hey manager, just checking you've seen this? Needs actioning by X date please"

DeanStockwelll · 20/06/2022 17:11

I am with the
I was just wondering if you had a chance to look into the below as I need the date / info / time frame by xxx.

I have also used,
I know you are very busy but have you had a chance to look into the below . . . . .

I rouldnt use gentle reminder/ polite notice.

If I know the person very well and we get on well i will sometime send a
Just a nudge to see if you have had a look at the below .
Followed by Oi this is a dig in the ribs , but I have to know the person very well before I'd send that

YellowHighHeels · 20/06/2022 17:19

Phone call is my preferred way of giving someone a shove.

Otherwise just resend your original email saying 'hi X, has there been any progress on the below, please? Grateful for a response by X as the deadline is Y. Many thanks'. I'm a bit pushy and will put 'please provide an update by X' in the subject bar.

It's probably just slipped through the cracks, people get that many email requests.

One of my first jobs included typing many letters which began “I refer to my communication of the 25th ult., to which I have not had the courtesy of a reply …”

That’s real ‘The Men from the Ministry’ stuff! Ult. and inst. Smile

Augend23 · 20/06/2022 18:12

I go for replying all (so the original email is included underneath) with "hello there, I'm just following up on the below. Please could you let me know X. Thanks and best wishes"

PalpitationsFairy · 20/06/2022 18:29

You don't need to say 'just' I always think it sounds so unecessarily apologetic. I'd say "Hello Rubbishatreplyingperson, I'm following up on my email of 1date as I need to provide a response 2date and I haven't heard back from you. Please send your comments by 3date. If there's someone else who would be better placed to provide this information please let me know. Kind regards, PalpitationsFairy. If they don't respond by 3date forward that sent email to their manager copying the non replyer in and asking if you've emailed the right team member for the information as you've emailed rubbishperson and haven't heard back and you need a response by before *2date for eg company reputation/ money/ other important priority reasons.

peanutpancakess · 20/06/2022 18:52

This is literally my life at work. Forward original email saying any update on this, thank you.
I'd get nothing done if I didn't do this!

I love this! I think I’m going to adopt this method in future
