£8.90 a gallon?

That can't be right...... I am being as think as a plank today. Just filled up and it cost £1.99.9 per litre.
So round it up to £2 for ease.
And my maths makes it 8.90 per gallon😵

Is that right?

Nope, there’s 4.54 litres in a gallon.

So it’s actually £9.07 a gallon.

Do people really still think in gallons?

I think in pence per mile, much easier. Fill up car, divide cost by number of miles since last fill up and reset trip meter. No need to remember how many litres there are in a gallon.

You should be able to get it for less than that. Have a look at the petrol prices app. I paid 182.7 yesterday for unleaded

But it probably won't be long before the front pages of the tabloids are all about the £10 gallon

My 90 year old dad was asking how much it was a gallon😄
That was the norm around here, I passed 2 fuel stations before giving up and filling up!

I can remember when the threat of the £5 gallon was a press meme. Distant days...

Whilst thinking the plan to restore imperial measurements was largely a distraction from the sleaze and worse of the government, perhaps restoring petrol to be in gallons (at least advertised as such) might reduce prices by a small amount.

Putting up 1p a litre seems little, 4 or 5p a gallon a lot more.

There’s not exactly much remembering to convert litres to gallons, just divide by 0.22 - think I learnt that when I was 10. Calculating the actual fuel consumption is much more useful than just cost per mile as a sudden drop in MPG can be a good early indicator of a developing issue.

OMG I realise I am missing the point of the thread but £1.99 (A$4.00) litre!!! It is $2.40 here in Australia which we thought was a shocker,

Dontlickthetrolley · 20/06/2022 13:25

And 2 years ago today it was 99.9p per litre...

Kite22 · 20/06/2022 13:54

This is why "inflation" figures bandied about aren't always helpful.
Knowing that some price index says inflation is at 5% or whatever, isn't really helpful when a lot of your budget is taken up by cost of petrol / diesel and the rise is astronomical figure closer to 90% (over two years, I agree, but the point remains).

hennybeans · 20/06/2022 20:26

Every few years I like to convert the price to dollars per gallon and then tell my American family. I think it puts their "high gas prices" into perspective!
