Using self scan today, it flashes up random check. Partner comes to do it, on her little screen it flashes up check the dishwasher tablets and cornflakes, which she does and scans them. All good .
But my point is, surely it's supposed to be random check of things in your bag to make sure you scanned them. If it tells her to scan items that it knows we have scanned, what's the point !
Am so confused by this Grin

I get frustrated when the screen gives a message to rescan your Waitrose card, which you do and there is still problems if you pick up the handset again it tells you have been selected for a random check.
So I find the handset gives better info and you need to get a staff member straight away rather than fluffing trying to sort it out yourself based on what's on the screen in front of you.

Some people scan things like value rice then put a bottle of wine in their bag - so checking what you've scanned is also useful I suppose

Also, if I've got barcode stickers for the fruit and veg I've weighed, they just re-scan those - if they were being thorough they should weigh them themselves! I'm glad they don't, though - I always seem to get summoned for a rescan when I have frozen stuff and in a rush!

On mine, I think it told the partner to scan 1 chilled, 3 fruit/veg, etc to get a good selection, rather than picking specific items as per the OP.

It’s to check you actually have those items rather than a bottle of vodka

SoupDragon · 28/08/2022 10:39

Years ago they used to rescan the entire shop which made more sense but was a total pain.

But surely if you wanted to steal, you'd scan the items you do have then chuck in a bottle of vodka without scanning it? There wouldn't be any benefit in saying you do have a packet of rice when you don't.

This is about the handheld scanners, not the self checkout where you scan it in at the till.

Yes, I could have those items , and a bottle of vodka, no ?
In Tesco they just randomly scan ten items or so from your shopping and check that they are on your shopping scanner list. This seems backwards.

Can you explain how that works? How does checking you have one thing prove you haven't stolen any number of other items? Hmm

I don't shop at Waitress but the simple tesco system doing a certain number of random items has the best chance of sucess

That still happens in my Tesco, I've seen it recently. From the conversation between the customer and the staff member it was the customer's first time with self scanning

You are obviously very poor at shoplifting😂
