Stratford on Avon or Warwick for an afternoon mooch ?

We are driving back to the north west from a week away in Hampshire and just wanted to have a few hours break on the way up. We were thinking Stratford-o-a or Warwick. We do have a dog so obviously won’t be able to go in places which limits us. Any ideas ? TIA

Both are doable, depending on what you like to look at as you stroll.

For Stratford I would suggest parking at the Leisure Centre, then walk to Riverside, where the theatre is. Nice area to stroll around, and a gentle amble around town will take you past the Shakespeare Birthplace and the old grammar school building, if you like that sort of thing.

In Warwick, if you park at St Nicholas Park or Myton Fields, you can take in the famous view of the castle from the bridge over the Avon, then walk into town. Plenty of interesting old buildings to see in the town centre (Eastgate, Oken’s House, Lord Leycester Hospital and Westgate, St Mary’s church). Or you can park for 2 hours free at Sainsbury’s (Saltisford, by the racecourse, good for the dog), but it’s a very steep, if shorter, walk to the town centre.

Both towns have plenty of pubs, cafes etc where you can sit outside.

Both are lovely, personally I prefer Stratford, walk along the river and plenty of places to sit outside with the dog if you want to get lunch/drink.

You've had great suggestions already, but I'll throw one more into the mix. Leamington. It's about 3 miles from Warwick, with a park and gardens down by the river and the Pump Rooms. Lots of Regency architecture to enjoy. And plenty of the small independent cafes have tables outside - with water bowls as I recall - for loitering with a dog.

Thanks everyone !

Stratford. It's a lot easier to park.

Stratford is the most dog friendly, most cafes and shops allow dogs inside and those that don’t have an outside area which is great.

Can park at the greenway which has a lovely walk along what was an old railway wi tbh some original bits still there and there’s a signposted walk to the river

I'd say Warwick ordinarily, as it's got lots of lovely lovely independent shops, but a lot will be closed on a Sunday. But it is a lovely town to visit and mooch around.

Stratford is tourist central on a sunny day (is it sunny today? I'm away at the moment), but that does mean things are open. I'd park and ride if you do go, and the weather is nice.

Or you could do a combo of Warwick and Leamington.

OR... wildcard - if you like ruined castles, go to Kenilworth.

Stratford a bit nicer I think.
