Knowledge of Bengali language/culture

Hello,
I am hoping I can find a MNer who can advise me and colleagues/friends on a well known Bengali phrase, blessing or poem to send good luck/best wishes and / or thanks to someone. The background is that a truly cherished and admired boss and friend is retiring. A kinder more thoughtful and generous man you could not meet. He grew up in Bengal til he was a young adult and so speaks the language and loves the place (Assam area). We have a gift in mind but thought an inscription heralding back to a place he loves may be a good idea. Anyone any thoughts? Many thanks if so.

There is a south Asian Mumsnetters section, try in that section.

@mumsys thanks for replying. So he was born in Calcutta but grew up in Assam - I know that produces a blended answer sorry! I am aware that given adjacency and the twists and turns of state/province/region ‘ownership’ there is great commonality between Assamese and Bengali? But that really is the limit of my knowledge. He also speaks Hindi if that is of help!

Assamese and Bengali are entirely different languages. Also a generic good wishes phrase is hard to think of.

if you’re sure Bengali is the one you wish to go for “Onek Shubhechha” is Many good wishes. You’ll need the script though. Here’s a screenshot of it in my writing but that doesn’t help you sorry!

Obviously - Bengali is my mother tongue so feel free to ask if any Bengali specific questions. But I know nothing of Assamese.

@brownbeauty80 thank you I do appreciate the offer. Bengal/Assam and the Hindi language are all part of his history so if we can touch on any or all he wiIl be touched. Is there a phrase, poem or blessing in Hindi you think may hit the mark? I have fallen down many a google tunnel on this one but mostly end up with wedding related stuff and don’t know enough to understand if that would be a blunder! Thanks for your time xx

Please check super carefully if he is religious. He may well be atheist - as many Indians are. Also - Hindu religious symbols - including the religious text and various icons and deitis - are currently associated by many with very right-wing nationalism by the name of Hindutva - so unless you are very sure of his religious leanings, perhaps a neutral, non religious stance is the best.

Shitscared123 · 18/06/2022 17:31

Yep I agree re his religious beliefs. Regardless, you sound like a wonderfully thoughtful person, and I hope you find the right words for him.
