High School Pencil Cases

Perhaps trivial but is this a thing? DS is starting Yr7 in September, what do boys use? Is there a certain type that people have, or something that people definitely don't have?

I know it's just a pencil case, but keen to get it right! I remember my pencil case was quite a big part of my life for a few years, even if I was mainly hiding cigarettes in there!

I know the shops will be full of them in a few weeks but we need to take ours to transition day so I might as well get it now.

Following. I have a dd starting y7 and I think she’s fully expecting to bring her old pencil case with her - it’s still in reasonable condition, as are the contents, but also wanting to get it Right for her!

Anything he likes will be fine, my son says no one cares!

At our school absolutely everyone uses their inside blazer pocket. It's madness but they do.

EskSmith · 18/06/2022 08:32

Not Smiggle etc.

In my experience fairly plain and cheap as they write all over them and/or barely use them as they keep the basics in their blazer pocket.
Plus if you have gone cheap if it's not right it can easily be replaced.

iloveredwine · 18/06/2022 08:33

When we bought a nike backpack there was a nike pencil case attached so mine used that for the first term then changed it for a plan black one

Holakaleidoscope · 18/06/2022 08:35

My son said he wanted just a plain black or blue one.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 18/06/2022 08:41

My Yr7 uses this one www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B09NCYDDHX?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

LizzieMacQueen · 18/06/2022 08:46

Just not one that has their name on it.

mizzo · 18/06/2022 08:47

Like bags what is deemed socially acceptable is probably school/area specific, so it's best to try and ask someone with insider knowledge of the school.

winesolveseverything · 18/06/2022 08:48

My current yr7 son uses a blue camo type one with 2 sections. Has his everyday pens in one side and crayons, scissors etc in the other.

Make sure you have a supply of spares- especially glue sticks and small rulers. They will lend and lose stuff. He has zip lock bags and lots of folders/wallets for homework. His maths geometry kit and calculator are permanently in a zip lock bag which protects them and keeps them altogether.

He has an under armour bag which is big enough to fit his books and his lunchbox inside.

I was more worried about the right type of thing than I needed to be. Didn't even put frube yoghurts in his lunch incase too babyish! He says no one is bothered about stuff like that!!

MrsPnut · 18/06/2022 08:50

My DD had one that stands up and slides down
so you can see the pens but once she started doing serious mock exams and needed a clear pencil case, she just kept on using that because you can see at a glance what you have.

chchchchch · 18/06/2022 08:58

DD went through smiggle in her early years, this was like 10yrs ago though and back then smiggle pencil cases were all the rage because of the different compartments. By the time she got to year 10 / 11 she just had a bog standard branded pencil case.

TenoringBehind · 18/06/2022 09:00

Plain black and nondescript. Smiggle would make them a bit of a laughing stock I think (‘so year 5’ type comments).

Notagain76 · 18/06/2022 09:05

Something plain but can be any colour. No lunch boxes maybe a clear Tupperware box for sandwich, then just a ikea bag or similar. Back pack under amour, Nike, adidas, super dry, or something similar. My lad wears kicker shoes. If walking when dark try to get a discreet high vis bit on rucksack and bonus if on coat also.

greenacrylicpaint · 18/06/2022 09:18

my dc have pencil bags.
I think I got the first ones from tiger (pretty funky if I may say so).

they are a popular thing for dc to get from museum gift shops.

greenacrylicpaint · 18/06/2022 09:21

for backpack - will your dc have to take a tablet or laptop?

if yes, it needs to have a padded laoprop compartment. also get a sleeve for the device.

sports stores often have a good selection.

Jovanka · 18/06/2022 09:23

My DC’s school specify clear see-through plastic pencil cases and a school-branded backpack.

BertieBotts · 18/06/2022 09:24

When I was at school the boys had sports branded ones.

MrsDrSpencerReid · 18/06/2022 09:24

My Yr7 DS currently has this one.

I think it can be very school specific (same as bags and school shoes) so do ask around local parents if you can, otherwise I would go plain black to be safe for the beginning. My DC dont wear blazers so do all have pencil cases, the girls seem to currently be into bright bright colours and boys camo/plain camo colours.

IggyAce · 18/06/2022 09:40

Blazer pockets is what my dd 15 uses. DS starts secondary in September and he’ll probably use his blazer pockets if not I might get him a clear pencil case.

TokyoSushi · 18/06/2022 09:41

Thanks so much, I've just ordered a plain black camo one so hopefully all good. Fortunately the bags are a bit less of a mystery as we live very close to the high school so I have been checking them out!

Cue a song by the Beautiful South!! Hope the transition to year 7 is as smooth as possible for your DS, OP.

MargaretThursday · 18/06/2022 11:22

Ds shoves a broken ruler, pencil and pen in his pocket. Somehow he gets away with that.
The girls always had a fully loaded pencil case.

They do have the rule (in a school where they're not particularly into rules about stuff) that pencil cases have to be mostly clear. WHSmiths does some nice ones that fit.
