Inverted nipples and smelly white stuff inside!

reallygrossquestion · 16/06/2022 12:53

My nipples got more and more inverted after breastfeeding each child and after 3 DC they're pretty weird looking.

The problem is that I get white discharge in them - I think every day (side note - what is that?!). And it stinks! I mostly remember to uncoil them in the shower and clean them out every day, but if I don't it's pretty gross.

Wtf is it?! Does anyone else have this?

Oh sounds awful, please see your GP. It sounds like an infection of some sort, or - without wanting to worry you - worse.

Phone them now!

Haha I'm being bossy as have spent 2 years pondering skin carcinoma or not... Made a thread, booked an appointment.

All the best!

katscamel · 16/06/2022 12:59

Definitely sounds like an infection. Please go to Dr and get it checked before it gets worse and becomes an abcess which is horribly painful and will need draining & antibiotics.

reallygrossquestion · 16/06/2022 13:51

Do you mean the discharge isn't normal?

I've had this since going through puberty - always noticed it a little bit. I thought everyone had it!

Gosh, not normal. Please get it checked out, it doesn't sound pleasant.

Nooo. Get an appointment to speak to your GP. Not normal!

Musicalmistress · 16/06/2022 13:59

Is it actually discharge from your nipples? Or could it be sweat/skin cells collecting there because they're inverted? I get a very small amount of white, slightly sticky substance in my (very deep) belly button.

Ducksinthebath · 16/06/2022 15:09

What’s going on is really far from normal and you need to see a GP.

I agree with this, is it a bit like the stuff that fills unused ear piercing holes?

Cocowatermelon · 16/06/2022 15:20

How long ago did you stop breastfeeding? If it’s only been weeks or a few months it could just be milk. Probably worth ruling out thrush or another infection but I wouldn’t assume it was anything scary without a medical opinion.

Afterfire · 16/06/2022 15:23

Any discharge or changes re your breasts needs urgently checking. It may not be anything sinister - quite often discharge/ milk when not breastfeeding can be a hormone imbalance leading to high prolactin levels (usually easily corrected) but definitely needs investigating.

beachcomber70 · 16/06/2022 15:38

I get a tiny, tiny bit of discharge in mine daily but it doesn't smell bad at all, just very mildly like mothers milk would smell. Not unpleasant at all.

I'm 73 and still going strong so it's not life threatening nor does it mean anything is wrong.

However if the smell is awful and you're worried it's best to get it all checked out with the GP.

beachcomber70 · 16/06/2022 15:39

P.S. I had my youngest child nearly 49 years ago...so had it since then.

theemmadilemma · 16/06/2022 15:50

Sounds like sebum like you get in piercings, I still get it in a very old nipple piercing. 😖

reallygrossquestion · 16/06/2022 18:24

Thanks, all. I am very surprised by the answers!

Thrush?? See gp for sure.

Math22 · 19/12/2022 02:19

Hi, really glad I found your question. I have this exact same issue. I am 6 months post part and tried to breastfeed in the first week but it wouldn’t work out for me/my baby.
i wondered if it was just dried milk but it’s a little late on now.
i just wondered if you found an answer? Xxx

KnobbyKnobson · 19/12/2022 02:27

Do any of the PPs saying this isn't normal have inverted nipples themselves? I do, since forever, and this is completely normal for me. I assume it's just typical sweat and oil and dead skin and other delights which rub off on your bra or clothes if you have standard issue nipples, but instead get "trapped" and form this weird substance if you have inverted ones. I never actually knew anybody else had this as it's not really something that's talked about.

CherryRipe1 · 19/12/2022 02:52

Get anything sinister ruled out at GP but it could be thrush/candida albicans as another pp mentioned.

lurkinglittleladybug · 19/12/2022 03:18

🤢… Yes get it checked ASAP, doesn’t sound normal, maybe you need some medicated cream or something?

BeNaiceLemonEagle · 30/05/2025 16:11

Im not a mom but I have inverted nipples too all my life lol these people are overreacting

Its like bellybutton lint, it's harmless. This is the only thing I hate about inverted nipples. I have some suction tab things and clean them like once every 2 weeks since that's when it's starts to build up

But yeah these replies don't know what they're talking about lol
