Why am I spotting a few days before my period?

Every month for the past couple of years I've had light pink/brown spotting for 2-3 days around the time of my period, followed by 1-2 days of no bleeding, and then my period starts. I've had blood tests and an ultrasound scan but all normal and GP just says it's probably just harmless hormonal changes in my cycle.

I'm in my early 30s and my periods are regular every month on a 30 day cycle (give or take a day here and there) and I typically have light period bleeding. No other symptoms apart from period cramps on the day my 'actual period' starts.

I had this when I was trying to conceive and was prescribed progesterone, which stopped it, apparently my progesterone level were dropping prematurely and it’s common in your 30s and 40s. The hormonal migraines and cramps I used to get before my period stopped with the progesterone too.

Thank you. Just curious, were you having issues ttc and did the progesterone help with that?

I had been ttc for over 6 months and had a chemical pregnancy and an early miscarriage in that time. The gynaecologist investigating the miscarriage tested my hormone levels (among other things) and although the results were not conclusive he suspected a short luteal phase might be the issue (and said the spotting could be a symptom) so I was prescribed the progesterone. I concevied fairly soon afterwards and the pregnancy was fine (I just had to keep taking the pg up to a certain stage). But of course it could just have been a coincidence. I live in an EU country where they hand out drugs like sweets and the doctor[s attitude was more "just in case it[s that" rather than anything more definitive..

I'm 45 and have had this for the past few years. Never had the coil in or been on the pill. I suspect I am perimenopausal. I was spotting with old brown blood 3 days ago. None for the last 2 days, then started my actual period today. But when I was spotting I had very severe cramps. First day of my actual period, and no cramps. I don't get it.

Thanks for replying @LeeMiller , glad it worked out

Hi everyone. Does anyone have any updates from this thread. I basically had a second trimester MMC back in Feb 21. Then some how since last July I started getting a week of brown spotting before my period. It took me ages to get some help and ended up going private as TTC after loss was so hard plus this ontop. I paid for a hysterscopy to check for polyps etc and nothing was found so they next step was to try and give me a stronger ovulation. I took clomid but I still started spotting at 7 dpo. So next cycle he gave me progesterone pessaries to take 2 days after ovulation. I’ve done 3 cycles of that now and no luck however it does stop the brown spotting for me.

Feeling deflated.

@MyToDoList I just went back through the thread and mines been since the month of my covid vaccine too?

After my miscarriage I had a few months normal periods then that started in the July when I had my vaccine. I can’t help but think it’s linked! Been having it over 12 months now. How are you getting on with it? Xxx

Loz2467 · 25/09/2022 18:30

Anyone? Sorry for the desperation I just feel so low still TTC. With it only starting after my covid vaccine. 😞

Bubblegum13 · 29/08/2023 20:38

Just wondered if there’s any updates for anyone having these symptoms?

Mushroo · 30/08/2023 09:18

My update probably isnt that helpful for those in the midst of TTC because I know it can be frustrating, but to give you hope I conceived third month of trying and I’m now 5 months pregnant. I even spotted the month it happened so I was convinced it hadn’t worked.

The month I conceived I actually did seed cycling. No idea if it was down to that, but worth a go as it was low cost and easy. I also took inositiol as I have PCOS and made sure I got 10,000 steps a day.

Good luck - it can happen. I was convinced I’d never conceive because although I only actively tried for 3 months, I was off the pill for 18 months before that, with spotting every single cycle.

Bubblegum13 · 30/08/2023 17:56

That's really helpful to know!

Glad it shows you can still conceive.
I've never heard of seed cycling til now so will look into that 👍🏻
