Oil/varnish/paint?

New bookcase to fit in a weird corner of the bedroom. My corner and I made it so it's for my stuff!

All furniture in our place is wood which means paint would look out of place if I move it at some point.
DH likes oil. I don't - I worry it will stain books, jewellery case etc.
DH doesn't like varnish but I think it's more practical.
But I am still tempted to paint it a colour DH won't appreciate just because it's for me and it will be in my corner. Although I'm usually against painting wood.

What would you choose?

Depends on what kind of wood it is. If it’s oak or mahogany or something like that, I’d say stain and finish it. You can certainly get a sealant that will keep the stain from bleeding through to your books or anything else.

When I was at university and very poor, I found an old bureau and chair that had seen better days. My dad repaired them for me, and then I spray-painted them bright, cheery yellow. They turned out great and I used them my entire four years at school. I also painted (with a brush) an old bookshelf that I use on the back porch for the pet food - it was a lot of work but I’ve still got it and the animals think it’s fine lol.

So just because something “doesn’t go,” doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Go ahead and paint it. It’ll stand out and look like the prized piece it is. Plus, painting is way less of a hassle than staining & the steps involved with that.

Plus, there’s about a zillion different colours to choose from — right? Surely there’s one you love. Plus, I’m getting the impression you’ve already got an idea…

I also love my refinished furniture but good Lord it was just so much work.

Let us know what you decide.

It's pine and it's not a work of art 😂
It'll be hidden in the corner behind a chest of drawers and my bedside table which is why I was considering paint. But if we were to move it an any point then I'd have to get rid of the paint unless it goes in one of the DC's rooms.
i was debating white on the outside (which you wouldn't see now but easier to put somewhere else) and my favourite colour on the inside of the shelves.
