What do you do about parties?

I will be honest I hate birthday parties so when my eldest was born in late July I thought 'Yes!' as I assumed I would get away with not having to do one and I have, until now.

Now he is asking for one, it wouldn't be big maybe 5/6 friends as he will be 9 so past the big party stage - but it's the summer holidays, people will be away. I already know that at least 2 of his friends will be on holiday at that point.

So what to do? It's too short notice to do one before schools finish now (Scotland so 3 weeks until summer hols). Could I wait until they go back (Mid August)?

Anyone had this same issue?

August birthday here. I had several very small parties (eg. 2 friends, plus sibling and one friend for them) or I moved my party forward a few weeks to be in term-time, or it was just a family party. Bit shit, but at least I got some celebration somehow.

The only year I got a massive party close to my birthday was because I held it the evening before A Level results came out!

I would hold your son's party after school goes back mid-August.

Before or after holidays. All my DCs have birthdays in the school holidays. I make plans in advance for them. My DD has an August birthday, I sent invites out last week for a July party.

I have done parties in the holidays, I just make sure I get the invites out early so we know how many can make it.

My birthday always fell in school holidays, I hated it, no parties and my friends would forget about me, unlike everyone who had term time birthdays and a big deal was made in school and exchanging presents especially when at high school. It was made harder because I didn't live in the same town as my friends or school so never saw them during the holidays.

I’m planning my daughters august party for July- but only because she wants a class party- the only time I will do this. After this is will be a smaller group in august- yes not everyone will be around but cest la vie . I wouldn’t push to September because everyone will think a year older and the momentum is lost after your bday.

Before or after the holiday for bigger parties and then maybe something small like a day out or sleepover on actual birthday if friends are available
