Filmed in my car

I've just been to the shops and on the way back I was parked in traffic and was nearing the end of my podcast so I picked up my phone to ff to the end so it would start the next lined up podcast. I can't have had hold of it for more than 20 seconds as I was just hitting the ff 30 second button and once I had the right spot on my phone I wasn't even looking at it
Anyway I heard a beep of a horn and as I looked over the flatbed van next to me had two men in it one of whom had his phone up as if he was filming me.
Now I know from Dh that even picking your phone up is an offence even at lights.
Is there anything they can do with the recording if they did, in fact, record me?
Obvs now I know I won't do it again but I'm worried now about what they can do with the recording.
Stressing myself out now.

No official knowledge, but I doubt they can do anything, if they were next to you then your number plate would be in shot so no one would be able to identify you.
Even if they did get your number plate there are too many factors for anything to come of it. Eg. How could anyone prove your engine was even turned on?

Well some police forces have a facility where you can upload videos of bad drivers - maybe the men will do that? Someone filmed my FIL last year and he just received a warning letter from the police, i don't think thatthey can actually do anything else as they didn't see you do it.

Hardertobreathe · 08/06/2022 10:54

They could, in theory, send the clip to the police but they would have to have your license plate in the clip as well.

we had to email dash cam footage of someone clipping our car to the police and, although the police contacted them and the damage was paid for, they didn’t take any action for them hitting us and driving off so I don’t think you need to worry too much even if it was forwarded to the police.

Thank you. I'm obviously not going round driving with my phone in my hand. I hate that. I think I've just done it without really thinking.

Your phone shouldn't be accessible whilst you are in the car - put it away unless you are using it for navigation and then it should be safely in a holder.

You may get a fine / points - hopefully you don't end up on the Daily Mail - it depends who filmed you though.

LondonQueen · 08/06/2022 11:03

Our local police force has a facility where you can upload footage like this and they do prosecute as a result. Unlikely it's clear enough to show you using your phone though so I wouldn't be too worried. You will only be banned if you've been driving less than 2 years, if not it's 6 points and a £200 fine.

Thank you. I'm hoping they were just being knobs and pretending.
I'm going to be on pins for weeks now.
Silly mistake. Won't happen again.

I've just checked and our local police have an option to report on their website but the require two minutes either side of the indecent and there's no way that it's possible.

Sorry but people recording drivers playing with their phones are not nobs. Says a lot about your attitude to the whole matter.

It really doesn't. I've said I know I was wrong.

Well weren't they doing the same as you? In a vehicle using a phone to film someone using a phone in a vehicle? While dobbing you in they'll be dobbing themselves in so I wouldn't be worrying about a couple of smart arses trying be clever!!

Not if it was the passenger doing the filming

Yes it really does 🙄

Someone in this scenario is a knob and it’s not the people doing the recording

Ok then.
Thanks for the people who were actually helpful. I appreciate your replies. To the others I'm glad I could help you feel good about having a dig at someone who is clearly upset and worried.

It sounds like nothing will come of it if your local police website requires 2 minutes of filming but just as a warning and to anyone else reading this thread, in my area (Yorkshire) the police themselves go around in HGV's with a police officer in the passenger seat with recording equipment to get evidence of people on their phones.
