Headboards - best one for sitting in bed and reading?

Just dreaming about bedroom furniture. What real life tips do you have about creating perfect spac for sitting up and reading before nestling down to sleep?

Warren Evans do one at an angle that is 30” or 21” high but they don’t look padded enough to lean back on and the wood ones look like a concussion hazard. warrenevans.com/beds/?maker=T46ecWecZSme

Love this Belsa Bed from Soho House website but again, would I want to stay in bed and read in it? www.sohohome.com/products/belsa-bed/74504414

Oliver Bonas have this shell one but would you just be hitting your head back just above where headboard ends? www.oliverbonas.com/furniture/flora-mustard-yellow-king-velvet-headboard-322721

this pisses me off so much!! All these beds designed by someone who doesn’t read books. My current bed is vertical slatted. Nightmare. One on holiday had a bit at the top that hit the back of my head meaning I had to slouch down underneath it. Then couldn’t drink tea. Best one I’ve found is one that is quite low and doesn’t go anywhere near as high as your head. So it supports your back but not your head.

I have a Habitat bed with a slanted back. I've just bought a van that has bed that slants on a ratchet! So these things do exist.

I love my Designers Guild one for exactly this reason, loads of headboard to rest on! It's in storage at the moment and my partner's metal Argos one just doesn't quite cut it...

Ooh that’s a nice one @Mufflette

I know these things exist, but I’m not sure what I should look for - does a slanted headboard just mean you slide down when you lean back with full weight? Do you have a link please for the ratchet bed @WombatNo12 ?

Glad someone shares the problem @PlantingTrees!

I actually don’t have a headboard, haven’t had one for 10 years, I pile up 3 pillow, I’ve perfected the placement of them. I will need to purchase a new bed soon so it’s not as fantasy, though I’ll probably be restricted by budget again. 10 years ago the cheapest bed sold by Warren Evans was the No headboard bed. One can dream!

They still make it...

The bed, that is. ^^

The van is your standard VW.

Costco do wedge cushions. My DH has one on his bed, excellent. 👍

WisteriaWishes · 06/06/2022 21:52

We have extra big square pillows that are for reading or drinking tea in bed.

SW1amp · 06/06/2022 21:53

We’ve got this one and it’s great with a couple of pillows for lumber support

BUT ours is light grey wool and there is a manky shadowy patch on DHs side from his hair putty
so don’t get a light grey wool one if either of you uses hair product

Get a reading pillow, they're amazing.

Eatingpizza · 06/06/2022 22:01

We are on the careful-with-money side (skint - but who isn't now?). I have waited over a year to find the perfect second-hand headboard. Padded, tall enough, good quality and excellent for reading in bed. So worth it.

The sova.com looked the best.

I've got a bedstead & have bought the JML Contour Legacy power bed think, it is a blow up thing you put under the top of the mattress & press a button to inflate, makes your bed like a power bed.

hilariousnamehere · 06/06/2022 22:04

V shaped pillow! I haven't found a headboard I like yet but my V pillow means I can sit up and read to my heart's content 💙

MerryMarigold · 06/06/2022 22:10

I got a cheap padded velvet one from eBay (new). It's very simple vertical 'pads' but it's so so comfy.

violetbunny · 07/06/2022 02:43

Our headboard is big and cushiony but our cats think it's a scratching post so have basically shredded it... Angry

BakeOffRewatch · 02/08/2022 21:54

I am closer to buying a bed! There seems to be a lot on sale now on places like made.com

the thread today in AIBU about whether to go king (5ft wide) or super king (6ft wide) had me thinking about beds again - and toddler was squeezing in between us plus a pregnancy pillow last night. I’ve realised the soho Belsa bed comes in emperor size! 6ft6 wide.
