Global majority

I understand this is the new preferred term for “ethnic minorities”. It sits oddly with me because it seems to define everyone in that global majority according to what they’re not ie white. The term seems to me to lump together people with nothing in common apart from that negative - eg Nigerians, Pakistanis, Iranians, Japanese, Chinese. Interested in comments.

PS I know people often object when the OP appears to vanish - Ive got to go out soon and wont be back until lunchtime.

But your argument could also apply to the term ethnic minorities, couldn't it?

The phrase is handing power back to people who experience racism. Collective terminology is helpful, reducing people to an acronym is not. Reducing people to their skin, or to a continent, that's othering and unhelpful.

One reason BAME was so popular might have been because it allowed white people to continue their laziness. Nb I am a white woman.

Global majority seems weird because - it could refer to a specific ethnicity - but which one? would people from the Indian subcontinent and diaspora consider that they are part of a larger group or more specific group? Same with people of E Asian heritage or African heritage? Some people might associate more strongly with a language/dialect group or country rather than ethnicity. I think ethnic minority is fine. BAME is ok - but it is more the way the term is used that is annoying - as the experience does tend to differ between different ethnic groups.

If somebody said this to me, I would think of Christianity. A true global majority, with 2.38 billion people.

It's left wing speak. More try-hard made up terms to change gullible people's perception of reality to fit agendas.

How is it relevant? There is no global state to make decisions based on this inexistent majority anyway.
