Bad smell..cause?

Earlier on this week I opened my bedroom wardrobe and was confronted with a really strong smell. It's making me think of rotting flesh or wee that's been left to sit for too long. I emptied my wardrobe, cleaned it out, washed all my clothes and it still reeks. I just cleaned the filter in the washing machine because I'm wondering if it's that. Other things:-

Some clothes smell really bad, others don't;
One side is much worse than the other;
None of my clothes have holes in.

Does anyone have a clue as to what might be causing it? Or how to get rid? It's driving me mad.

Can you get to the back of the wardrobe, is there mould or damp on the back/side that presses against the wall?

Have you a cat that's hidden its bounty under your wardrobe?

Theimpossiblegirl · 05/06/2022 00:13

I keep dehumidifiers in my wardrobes and leave them open to air. This has made so much difference.

No idea. But how long have you had the wardrobe? What's it made out of? (Varnished wood?) When did you first notice the smell? Any new leather or suede items? Just random thoughts

Dead mouse under the floorboards or in the wall? How old is the house? This is more likely to happen in older houses because of the material used and access to nooks and crannies.

Dead mouse somewhere, it's a horrific smell.

I agree it could be a dead rodent. Is the wardrobe built in or freestanding? Rats/mice can die in wall cavities or under floorboards.

My thoughts exactly!

It's an inbuilt wardrobe. It's been there since house was built 20 years ago. I came back from hospital last week and that was first time I noticed it. Everything on the top shelf is affected. I don't have a cat but do have a dog.

Top shelf? Not something which has got into the loft space and died? Often in inbuilt wardrobes the top of the wall and the ceiling can have a slight gap if there is no coving etc. This would cause any smells from the loft to seep in.

I only know this as we got the smell of cannabis seeping through into our wardrobes from nextdoor.

JogOnJimmy · 05/06/2022 11:26

Have you noticed any droppings? The smell makes me think you may have mice

RandomMess · 05/06/2022 11:44

Have you checked all the pockets of clothes?

FriedTomatoe · 07/06/2022 19:54

Figured. It was my old dog walking jacket. It was disgusting.
