What was in my fish?

DH made hake and prawn meatballs today. Yum. But as I was chucking out all the prawn heads and fish bones that he had boiled up to make the stock, I noticed a white ball about 1cm across, maybe a bit bigger. I fished it out (ahem) and it was sort of crumbly, like chalk or plaster. No taste (yes, I gave it a lick, as I'd already eaten the rest of the dish). What could it have been?

I should have taken a photo, but didn't think. But it was pure white, almost perfectly spherical until I started to crumble it a bit, and about 1-1.3cm diameter.

No, it wasn't the hake's eye...

roe?

Definitely not roe. It was just one white ball with a chalky texture and no taste.

The fish was from the fish counter of a reputable supermarket, if that makes any difference.
