I walked past my local community centre earlier, and it occurred to me that I have never gone in there. I am not really sure what goes on in community centres if I am honest!
Do you know what goes on in yours? Please share!

Currently sat outside one waiting for a dd to finish a dance class.

in this one there’s dance classes, brownies and rainbows, bowls, a toddler group, bands practice, there’s various memory and medical condition support groups and you can hire it for parties. There’s probably more, but that’s the stuff I know about.

Birthday parties, midwife weighing clinics/sure start/bf groups (sometimes), food banks might operate out of them, knit and knitter groups, yoga, charities will use them for meeting people they're supporting/carrying out group work, first aid courses and other classes...all sorts really.

By 'midwife' I meant 'health visitor', brain fug

Ours has baby groups, guiding units, Fitness classes, activities for older people, Sunday school as it is next to a church, a cafe and a pottery painting studio. Also hire it out for birthday parties and christenings etc.

I used to go to a youth club and brownies at the local community centre. That one, near where my parents lives, still hosts the same clubs. Plus things like Zumba, parent and baby classes, etc.

I don't think we actually have a community centre where I am, despite it being a very built up area and only 15 minutes of so away.

Some are used as a permanent base for foodbanks, advice, community services, playgroups etc but most have rooms to hire for parties and events, activities like yoga, art and bridge, social clubs, organisations like Guides and Cubs, kids groups like ballet classes and gymnastics. support groups like AA and Weightwatchers.

Kite22 · 02/06/2022 21:24

Can be anything that needs a slightly bigger room.
Youth organisations (Scouts, Guides, BB, GB, St Johns, etc)
Baby / Toddler / Stay and Play Groups - sometimes Nurseries and pack away playgroups
Childminder Groups
Choirs, orchestras, bands of different sorts
Badminton
Keep fit in all varieties (from Sit Fit to zumba)
Art classes
Support Groups for all sorts of conditions - Stroke Club, Parkinson's Club, Dementia Cafe, etc etc, or parents support groups for children with Autism for example
Homestart groups
Job Fairs.... Polling Stations when needed..... Blood Donation Points
Home Ed Groups
Various Groups for older folk - lunch clubs, knit and natter, Men's Shed, Fellowship Groups
Dance classes
Martial Arts
Worship Groups

Then people hire them for parties and celebrations

Community centres in our area provide Food banks, English classes, Toddler groups, Empowerment classes, Arts and crafts groups, Over 50s groups - the lot. A lot of people in the community would be lost without them!

JustLyra · 02/06/2022 21:42
