New job dilemma

I've been job hunting for a couple of weeks after years of being unable to work due to illness. Ideally I was after something I could do during the week instead of being at home alone.

In the past week, I have been offered 2 jobs and I'm really struggling to pick one.

Job 1 - more hours but a 20 minute drive away. Offered evenings & weekends (which isn't ideal but doable)

Job 2 - five minute walk from my house, 4 days per week, including alternate weekends, hours 10am-2pm but not something I've done before.

Job 1 is the 'better' job and also something I've done before. Job 2 is better working hours (I have 2 secondary aged kids) and although less hours, no travel costs.
I'm tying myself in knots trying to decide, but I need to make the decision today.

I realise I am very fortunate to have even been offered one job. It's a huge step for me though, I've been in and out of psychiatric hospitals and under the care of mental health services for 7 years and finally feel well enough to get back into working so this is a really big deal and I don't want to make the wrong call.

If can afford it then 100% job 2

Sprig1 · 02/06/2022 07:01

Definitely job 2.

Jubileeeeeeee · 02/06/2022 07:06

Job 2 if you are ok with every other weekend.
Congratulations.

Thanks both.
I think I am leaning more towards job 2. The money side of things isn't so much of a factor. This is purely me dipping my toe back in the water so to speak.
(the extra hours from job 1 would be fuel costs anyway so it sort of balances out)

If job 2 is financially viable, definitely that one. If you haven't worked for a few years too due to health, it might be better to have a slightly better break back into it, rather than 0-100 if that makes sense.

Job 2 - it has the hours you want

Job 2 if you are ok with every other weekend.
Congratulations.

Thank you!
Every other wknd 10-2 is definitely preferable to every wknd (job 1 offered alternating sat day/eve ie one week the day shift and the next week would be the evening shift, and then every Sunday 10-5)

I think working 10-2 would be good stress wise as the shift isn’t too long and you won’t have a mad rush to get there or be hanging around all day waiting for an evening shift to start.

hoorayandupsherises · 02/06/2022 07:16

Definitely job 2! Congratulations on getting your offers after being so ill Flowers

ScoobyDoNot · 02/06/2022 07:21

@Baker90 thank you, that makes sense.

@pippinsleftleg thank you. Yes, it does!

@Jubileeeeeeee I agree! Plus I don't want to be going out to work when DH & kids are coming in from school and work. It completely defeats the object of finding something to do in the day!

@hoorayandupsherises thank you. It's been a long time getting to this point but I am finally there!

Thank you all, I think I'm just being clouded because I've done the other job before. Fear of the unknown and all that.
I think I've made my mind up now though!

Job 2 sounds great, huge congrats for being offered 2 roles, what a lovely dilemma to have!

Kreature69 · 02/06/2022 07:36

I agree..job 2....not reliant on a car, much better hours.

custardbear · 02/06/2022 08:16

Be kind to yourself as you've had a rough ride, take the easier job. Brilliant you've been offered two!! Well done you

Blaze1886 · 02/06/2022 08:28

Both involve weekends so neither

Keep looking
