Travel to and from the airport is going to cost almost as much as the holiday.

What am I missing?

It's Heathrow and we're only about a 2 hour drive away or similar by train.

I would usually go by train, but the flight home is due in at 8:30 pm so only a small delay would see us missing the last train home.

So , I looked at driving and can't believe the cost of parking!

What do other people do? It's only 4 nights, but in August.

No options on flights, there's only one flight per day. Hence Heathrow in the first place.

If it's a late flight I book a hotel near the airport and stay overnight then travel home the next day. Loads of cheap basic ones.

WreckTangled · 29/05/2022 18:20

We always book parking usually about £10 per 24 hours? That's Gatwick though haven't flown out of Heathrow for a while.

SwedishEdith · 29/05/2022 18:26

I see those costs as part of the cost of the holiday. Do you really mean the to and from the airport will cost as much as the holiday or as much as the flight?

nearlyspringyay · 29/05/2022 18:37

We get a cab / Uber. It's about the same price as parking and we are about 90 mins from Heathrow on a food run.

Oblomov22 · 29/05/2022 18:41

I book parking way ahead. Can get it for £39. 4 nights at Gatwick, Heathrow, stanstead, Luton. As you get nearer the date it goes above £100.

Airport parking has got really expensive post pandemic.

We used to be able to get a week at Leeds or Manchester for about £40-50, but we've just paid over £60 for 4 days and last autumn I think it was about £70 for a week.

That's best price online, usually for the multi storey. We might be able to get it for a few quid less by using Jet parks which is a bus ride away and it takes ages to find a space but I CBA with the hassle.

I've thought about trying different ways eg public transport, but for us it either takes ages or adds on an overnight, so I'd rather avoid.

Seems to be just part of flying abroad these days unfortunately.

Sometimes a better bargain to get hotel and parking together, and you could use it the night you get back

Log into Holiday Extras and price it, then leave it - they will email you a discount code usually

Crikeyalmighty · 29/05/2022 18:47

Ah this is where it's a bonus for us- disadvantage of living in Windsor- flight path can be a pain at times- advantage- £20 taxi to terminal 5 £24 to terminal 2 -- and Gatwick doable too and cheaper than parking!!

gunnersgold · 29/05/2022 18:50

Take your car and stay at a hotel ?

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 29/05/2022 18:58

If you have access to any of those 'perks' schemes you get with work/childcare vouchers/insurance/banks it's worth checking. I get 30% airport car parking through Lifeworks which is my work scheme.

User487216 · 29/05/2022 18:59

Heathrow parking is generally more expensive than some other airports, can you get one which is off airport that runs a bus in, they are generally cheaper. Also try to get a discount code from somewhere, MSE or Hotukdeals might have one. I did see recently that it had gone up a lot post covid unfortunately.

Cornishmumofone · 29/05/2022 19:02

Can you get a coach home?

Dominuse · 29/05/2022 19:03

How much is a taxi?

User487216 · 29/05/2022 19:04

How much are you looking at for 4 days

Afterfire · 29/05/2022 19:06

We live in Norfolk and when we travel via London we always book into a premier inn for the night before or after and go via train.

Trendytrousers · 29/05/2022 19:13

Have you done a proper comparison? If you book far in advance and go for a cheaper option where they minibus you to and from the car park it should be cheaper www.comparetheairportparking.com

Trendytrousers · 29/05/2022 19:14

Yep just checked again as I’m on holiday for 2 weeks end of August going from LHR and can park for £83 via a park and ride option for all terminals.

Rattysparklebum · 29/05/2022 19:50

We use a site like Park On My Drive, you can usually get a space for around £5 a day and within walking distance of the airport
