Actually cannot watch this Chernobyl documentary

Because Ben Fogle keeps pronouncing "nuclear" as "nuculor". Ffs it's a word that's going to be used a lot in a documentary about Chernobyl. If you've got a job narrating such a documentary you have to be able to pronounce that word properly. It's jarring.

This drives me mad!

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 24/05/2022 21:22

Everyone else is saying it properly. The Brits, the Yanks, the Russians, the Ukrainians. Every single other person on the programme can say this word apart from Ben bloody Fogle.

I hate being snobby about pronunciation but I really don't understand this one.
I mean it's new clear. It's harder to say nucular!

Mushroo · 24/05/2022 21:27

North west and I’m pretty sure most people round here would say New-clee-ur and not New-clear.

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 24/05/2022 21:28

Agree that I don't want to be snobby and I don't think I am being so. It's a documentary about a nuclear power plant fgs. The word is the subject of the programme. He must have said it around about fifty times so far. Incorrectly.

I agree. And the pace and tone of it too - like a Newsround item from about 1974 aimed at 10-year olds. Yawn.

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 24/05/2022 21:32

Yes, it's quite shit overall. Shame because they've got some interesting people on there.

I meant as opposed to nucular. Try it it's honestly an extra bit.

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 24/05/2022 21:54

Yes, exactly. It's not a question of accents.

It's Benedict Cumberbatch and the pengwings all over again.

Squiff70 · 24/05/2022 22:15

Almost as annoying as Mumsnetters not knowing the difference between 'loose' and 'lose'. Most women are either 'loosing' weight or their sanity. Sometimes both.

No excuse for not correctly pronouncing the word 'nuclear' on a documentary about a nuclear power plant. You'd think somebody would have corrected him when he started narrating.

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 24/05/2022 22:21

Or sacked him.

15 minutes into ep2 he's started saying new clear. Somebody has had a word. But it begs the question why they didn't rework ep1 and let him fix it before it went out?

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 03/06/2022 11:19

Because they don't care, Carl. They. Don't. Care.

I didn't watch the second episode. The first was so shit that it nudged me to get now tv and watch the sky series which I've been meaning to do for ages. So I guess I can thank Ben Fogle for that.

Just started watching it. Ben's driving me nuts too, the word literally jumps out at me, every time he says it, - wrongly. Very irritating....

#@BlueTitSmilingAtMe

I just wonder whether he is out of his depth on this one,
as personable as he comes across on screen,
is he the right type of gravitas presenter to be narrativer 🤔 of such depth documentary as this then?

Flowerpot7777 · 30/03/2024 11:50

Arghhhh!!!! It’s driving me insane.

BlueRidgeMountain · 30/03/2024 11:55

Exactly why I switched it off. I work in the nuclear industry. So many people cannot say it properly. I seem to spend most of my day just gritting my teeth at them, and I’m scared that one day it’s going to bubble up and I’ll completely lose my shit at someone and scream “it’s nuCLEAR ffs”.

Flowerpot7777 · 30/03/2024 15:20

😂😂😂😂 I feel your pain 😂
