Exhausted after one glass of wine

I'm not a big drinker but have always enjoyed a couple of glasses of red or white wine. Lately whenever I have just one glass I feel totally exhausted and literally have to close my eyes to sleep! What is going on ??

How old are you? Most of us get a lot less tolerant with age. Plus, post 40 women do all sorts of weird things, mind and body unfortunately.

Are you working full time, running a house and looking after DC? It is exhausting.

Fusillage · 22/05/2022 10:58

Is it definitely every single time? I have realised that in specific scenarios - always a restaurant and always one glass but not every time - I get the feeling you describe. An absolutely sudden wave of exhaustion to the extent I feel unwell. I wondered if maybe it was a specific type of wine. Otherwise (depending on age, the dreaded M)!

I'm nearly 48 so wondered if it's part of the perimenopause. I have a busy life, working, single mum, daughter with autism so wine is my one pleasure of an evening !! I thought it might me a one off but it's happening all the time now.

I think there are many women on here who report the same thing (very sadly!). Could you swap your tipple for something else like a G and T maybe and see if that helps?

lollipoprainbow · 22/05/2022 11:06

@Fusillage maybe I'll try a different tipple, I had a glass of wine last week and went off for a bath, I was awoken by my dd9 staring at me saying 'mummy why are you asleep?' !!

It's perfectly normal as we age. I've never been a huge drinker but could down a respectable amount on exceptional occasions when young. For a while now I enjoy only one small glass of exceptional wine and prefer water otherwise. I'm sure lots of people ignore what their body is screaming out to them, but that's a whole other story.

TheWeeDonkey · 22/05/2022 11:31

I'm glad it's not just me. I like a Friday night wine but about the last 12 months one glass and I'm fit for nothing! Gives me a terrible headache too.

TooManyPJs · 22/05/2022 11:42

My DH has started getting this a few years ago (so I don't think it's menopause 😬). Doesn't happen all the time. We've tried to work out a pattern (ie particular drinks etc) but there doesn't seem to be one other than it's more likely to happen when he's very stressed or exhausted already.

pensionconfusion · 22/05/2022 12:12

The same happens to me. The first mouthful hits my toes and one glass is enough to make me very tipsy. I rarely drink now and if I do I pour myself half a glass. 🙄

lollipoprainbow · 22/05/2022 12:20

I don't even feel drunk just v v tired !!
