Jubilee 'Bring a dish' ??

So apparently our street is having a party and we're invited to bring a dish. Road closure approved and everything. Bouncy castle, kids face painting, ice cream van etc etc

But we're also asked to bring out a table to go in the middle of the street (fuck knows how we'll get it out the door) and bring a shareable food dish.

It's a massive street!

And I'm not the greatest cook.

What do I cook? Maybe a Mumsnet chicken? Or a massive salad? I'm certainly not even going to attempt the jubilee pudding with a zillion ingredients.

I possibly could spend the precious extra bh on Thursday making Tiropitas (Greek cheese pies) Or cheat and get a sandwich platter from Costco?

God! I hate having to be sociable Confused

Or in a more serious manner

  • big platter of sandwiches or wraps
  • potato salad and cooked cooled chicken drumsticks
  • big bowl of salad, couple of French baguettes sliced and buttered, rotisserie chicken sliced up
  • quiche

Cheat! If you're not the greatest cook then buy a couple of Lidl's Greek cheese and spinach swirls from the frozen section. Chuck in the oven and then dump on the table!

MadMadMadamMim · 19/05/2022 19:24

Airily say it's in remembrance of Prince Philip (who was Greek)...

HSKAT · 19/05/2022 19:26

Agree, buy something and cook it.

NaiceLeftie · 19/05/2022 19:35

Make a massive (Mumsnet) chicken salad? That would feed the 5 thousand and more. 😆

Or buy something - doesn’t have to be homemade, does it?

Do you have a garden table or foldable table? Or do you know someone you can borrow one from?

StuckInTheMiddleOfNowhere · 19/05/2022 19:38

Cheat. I bet everyone is cooking, id go for a tray of different cakes, kids would love it.

A very easy and cheap option, if you have the facilities, is a huuuuuuge vat of popped popcorn. You can go traditional with salt, pepper, and maybe butter and/or add spices and fresh or dried herbs if you have a source for them. Hard grated cheese like parm or aged asiago is nice, though not as inexpensive. Honey and peanut butter popcorn also works. If you want to make more of a "mix" kind of thing, peanuts and raisins and other dried fruit are good to add in.

Thanks for the ideas. Think I'll just go for tiropitas. They always vanish and really only take a while to make. I'd rather not cheat. Just hope filo doesn't sell out 😂
