What do you put on the TV in the background to relax?

When I was a kid I used to go to my Granny's every Saturday and after playing out I would snooze in front of the telly with her watching a Western in the background. If there's ever a Western on the telly when I'm flicking through I have to put it on for a while.

I now have some golf tournament on in the background. H has just come in and asked why I'm watching the golf but I just find it relaxing. Cricket and snooker are also relaxing although I don't take notice of any of the details.

Anyone else like this?

Golf here too. It's so relaxing!

Property programmes, decluttering or organisation
Medical reality series

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 19/05/2022 23:00

I don’t switch the telly on until there is something I want to watch, but I can spend hours with a good pod cast series and I get loads done whilst listening

Hawkins001 · 19/05/2022 23:01

for me, it's usually YouTube, it used to be music videos and to a degree they still are, but then after a bit I get bored so it's more clips of errors, either driving , omg some drivers, or it's people either pranking or doing random activities, then at the moment I've started more documentary watching after seeing clips of the big short, so I'm starting to learn more about the stock market.

Judge Judy

aurynne · 19/05/2022 23:05

Nothing, I don't remember last time I switched the TV on. If it's in the background it annoys me. If I'm at a friend's and no one is watching it I ask whether I can turn it off. I love peace and quiet.

pandora206 · 19/05/2022 23:05

Various gardening vlogs on YouTube do it for me.

I also find 'Round the World Live' cams (Boston and Maine live channel) really relaxing day or night.

Kite22 · 19/05/2022 23:07

In the background? Nothing, ever. TV in the background drives me crazy. If I go to a friend’s house I find it really hard to deal with conversation and the television on. For me, it’s there to be watched not as background

This is me.
It is either off, or I am watching it. I find it the opposite of relaxing for it to be on in my eyeline. I really hate those food pubs where they have TV on in my eye line.

merryhouse · 19/05/2022 23:07

I can't do that. If the tv is on I watch it. If we're in a pub with a tv I have to sit with my back to it, or I start reading the subtitles.

If I want background noise I put on some music.

easyday · 19/05/2022 23:12

No but I have the radio on most of the time. The TV is too distracting to have on as just background.

Fizzyfish · 19/05/2022 23:17

Bob Ross painting landscapes is hard to beat...either that or love a bit of Columbo 😅

Old episodes of Poirot.

Ooh me too

SneezesHaveStarted · 19/05/2022 23:21

Friends, Downton Abbey, or something Jane Austen-y (usually the BBC series of Pride and Prejudice)

ChazzaGirl · 19/05/2022 23:38

There used to be a thing called Slow TV which had things like a narrow boat cruising down a canal for a few hours - very peaceful and relaxing and weirdly interesting (45 mins in and ‘ooh look there’s a dog on the canal bank’). Not sure if it’s still around (the tv show, not the dog).

Nat6999 · 19/05/2022 23:49

I relax to old TV stuff like Minder, New Tricks, The Professionals, Lovejoy or Pie in the sky. To be honest I don't watch many current TV programmes.

SilentBob · 20/05/2022 00:20

Falling asleep tv for me is Poirot, Midsomer Murders, Marple, Agatha Raisin, Jonathan Creek etc etc

I have also started with Lovejoy but he's not in the echelons with the above just yet- he's the newbie.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 20/05/2022 06:01

Friends
Keeping Up Appearances
The Simpsons
Frasier
Black Books

unidentia · 20/05/2022 06:15

In general I'm a tv off person but have a soft spot for Wimbledon tennis. Sound of the ball against racquet, the umpires and line judges calls, the crowd noise...so soothing.

Caspianberg · 20/05/2022 07:02

I also don’t have tv on in the background, drives me potty.
But I hate ironing, so it’s like bribing myself to have something on to distract me

( I also pay myself in Lindt chocolate balls)

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/05/2022 07:05

nothing
i would watch tv
rather than have the background
if i want something easy to watch? agree with an old poirot or something from Drama channel

MrsLargeEmbodied · 20/05/2022 07:06

also have the radio on

FloraGreysteel · 20/05/2022 07:15

Ed Stafford survival programmes and videos of farriers shoeing horses.

FloraGreysteel · 20/05/2022 07:17

YouTube videos by that Modern History bloke who is living his dream of being a medieval knight!

Rot · 20/05/2022 07:21

Another one who finds 'background telly ' the opposite of relaxing. I spend my life turning off TVs that no one is watching.

it's a waste of electricity, apart from anything else.

Madmog · 20/05/2022 08:13

We're making a real effort to switch tv off unless we're actively watching it now. In the past I'd having problems said house buying programmes abroad - taking me into dreamland!
