Ankle ligament problems

Evening all.

Posting this in the general chat to increase my chance of replies.

To cut a long story short: I very badly sprained my ankle nearly 6 months ago (rolled it whilst playing netball).

I’ve had various physio appointments and have done some exercises. Also had an ultrasound scan which showed 3 ligament tears.

Ankle is obviously a lot better than it was, but still miles off from being “normal” and like the ”good” one. It’s still swollen, hurts in certain positions, hurts first thing in the morning and I can’t put any significant weight on it i.e run!

I’ve finally managed to get my GP to refer me to an orthopaedic surgeon and I have an appointment in a few weeks. I have played Dr Google and am now wondering whether I will need ligament surgery to sort it because surely now, 6 months down the line, things should be pretty much back to normal??!

So my questions are, has anyone suffered with a sprained ankle that wouldn’t heal, and if you did, what happened? Did you have surgery etc? Or was it just a very long recovery period? Maybe I am being inpatient, I don’t know, but god I am tired and depressed with having a bad ankle 😩

Hi Flowers 💐

I know it's a little old now but have just come across your post in trying to find someone who may be experiencing similar to me...

How are you doing now? Have you had any improvement? Have you been referred for surgery?

I'm so sorry to hear you've been suffering after so long. My situation is very similar - I rolled my ankle badly just before Christmas. Heard a snap and felt intense pain, husband helped me hobble home. I RICEd it immediately and stayed off it a few days but after no improvement I was advised to go to a&e. Xrays showed no bone damage so I was told it was "just a sprain". Take it easy for 4-6 weeks. Keep ice-ing etc.

I didn't feel any better so I saw chiropractor who did some weird stuff to it. I thought this was OK but after another opinion it seems she didn't treat it properly! The GP's physio gave me 6 weeks of strengthening exercises to do which I've done but still in so much pain, unstable, have had to stop doing all but short walks. She finally referred me for ultrasound which I've now had but the radiographer said the ultrasound won't pick up any ligament damage and recommend I now have MRI.

I'm waiting for the GP to refer me for this and will probably be in for a long wait again, but I'm just so frustrated, like you it seems, that this has gone undiagnosed for so long and it's impacting my daily life so significantly! I spend much of the day limping around and with an ice pack on it! Stairs are difficult too. First thing in the morning it hurts badly, or if I get up in the middle of the night it almost gives way. Mine's on the inside of my right ankle (deltoid ligament is what the physio said) and the bony sticky out part hurts so much like it's badly bruised.

No idea what to do now - I can only assume a ligament tear but a bad one if I'm still suffering after so long??

I've also started experiencing pins and needles sensation in my foot in the last week or so. Worried that's related to this too.

Would be interested to know what's happened with yours since your post..

Sending you healing vibes!! X
