"I mean........"

Why do so many people answer questions or start conversations with the phrase "I mean....."

Just a common turn of phrase.

Just seems to be everywhere.......

No idea, it’s awful. It’s even worse when people say “do you know what I mean?” After saying something that isn’t difficult to understand at all.

It's not as bad as 'like'

I mean…why does it bother you though?

It’s just filler/pause language like “umm” and “y’know”

I can think of worse, the need to end a sentence with....... for one.

It doesn't bother me as such - it just seems to be everywhere suddenly. And it seems to be the start of every single answer/statement/conversation when people are interviewed on TV.
