Clue on here that didn’t actually relate to my greens put me in the right direction. Some words I already had which weren’t greens seem to relate more to the answer. I do feel confused about how it works sometimes

WTF? Got to 992 quite quickly, used up all my knowledge on a rather niche subject, came on here and then was guided by @InMySpareTime - cannot understand the route to this word!

That was different. Did not go the way I thought it was going, and I surprised myself with a sideways jump that turned out to be the word.

Think about what an 877 looks like, the target word involves something that looks sort of similar, but with moving things on top. It's a bit like a 944 but you're less likely to do it alone.

very much on the wrong track, but a clue here made me think of sort of the opposite theme and here we are.

Think about competitive plays that are more cerebral than physical. Sedentary. Russians might also be involved.

Ugh, I got it. Needed a ridiculous number of hints both from the hint and the stupid hint button which I always end up using even though it’s awful. Still not quite sure how many of my greens fit with the answer.
