Help with starting Minecraft

So I’m clueless about all this but my DS is 7 and asking for minecraft as lots of his friend seem to be using. We have an iPad which I believe can be used. No games consoles in house and I know nothing about games really. What do I need to know/do to help him with this?

I really don’t want him online with strangers being able to access him. Can he play just on our iPad like he does with the other little games he had in there? If he eventually wants to link with friends can that be secure. TIA

My DS 8 plays on the Switch now, but we started him off with the iPad app. It was £7 at the time and well worth it!

Start him off in Creative mode, as there are no mobs/creepers etc. He can just build and will have a full inventory.

You will need to set up a Microsoft account for him. I'm sure if you download the app it will prompt you automatically through all the stages of set up. I can't say its the most intuitive, but you can go online as a parent and alter all the settings so he can't chat/play with others. That can be opened up over time.

Also, by setting up an account he will be able to switch to another device over time if he did end up with a Switch/other console.

I think that's enough to get him started.
