I am about to be promoted in a big international company, where part of the ceremony of the meeting of the Managing Partners is that you have a formal gala in the US (head quarters in NY) where there is a band and everyone dances.
It is custom that you dance formally with the more established or longer-tenured partners (not established yet whether this means dancing with men AND women.) I have heard from company lore that some of the managing partners are fond of traditional dance moves like tango and look favourably upon the young uns who know how to ballroom dance.
I am one of these people who, since university, has always looked enviously at friends who effortlessly dance with partners in formal occasions or discos or wherever. Every time anyone comes near me I seize up.
What's the secret? Do people go to classes? Should I be able to dance naturally with a partner? Are we just swaying from side to side? If my partner "leads" what does that even mean I should do?
