I didnt understand InMySpareTime's clue, got 979 by a bit of a shift from 974

974 was hard to clue from, the clue was supposed to nudge you into the 980s or 990s word types from where you could get the answer.

I feel like I have tried all words relating to this!

This is an attempt at a clue to the stepping stone...
If things are 974 they have things in 797

have you googled 974? because there is a word in it's definition that will bump you higher into the 990s

Depends which definitions you find, some do but some don't.

There's some humdingers in the top 1000 today - I can only imagine the semantic relationships are things like "1000 846 as ..."

Can anyone recommend any other “x-dle” games (thanks for intro to heardle in earlier post). My contribution is Worldle (not Wordle) - where you have to guess the country from its outline worldle.teuteuf.fr

Yes...Maybe it's inherent in the way the semantic relationships are formed that it may do this if the target word is likely to be found in conjunction with unusual ones. I don't think it's got any sort of weighting for how frequently the words in the green list are actually ever used.
