What's wrong wit bread?

I didn't eat it for 8 years, although had the very occasional ciabatta roll.

I have always been slim but have atrocious IBS and bloating. I wake up with a flat stomach and can work a good belly up by 4pm. Of course this was checked out long go, but i only gave up bread because I didn't think it was vital to nutrition.

So recently I began buying organic sourdough and loved it, but within 5 days I am super bloated and have put on weight! Nothing else in my diet has altered, and i dont calorie count or restrict generally.
Of course it might be for another reason, but i thought sourdough was low GI and ok. It is delicious so i will be sad to let it go.

Has anyone else had this, where taking up bread after a long absence made a negative impact?

What have you been putting on it? How big is your one slice? How much weight are you talking?

If you’re having the slice of bread on top of what you usually to eat, it’s most likely around a couple of hundred extra calories. If you love it, I’d skip a chocolate bar (or similar) to compensate if you feel you really need to. It would be surprising for one extra slice of bread a day to make you put on a significant amount weight so quickly though. Maybe it’s your cycle? That makes a massive difference to me.

I normally eat a lot of decent fruit (berries) and veg, Used to mix that with chicken and fish.
Recently went over to sourdough and had two 1cm slices per day with salad and either cheese or egg or chicken in between. I appreciate this is a few more calories but how in the heck would it show in so few days?

I would think it is water weight as it is soft and my overall structure is not changed. I am not larger in the regular sense or thicker. Just softer and puffier and bloated!

I would think there's a chance of your body reacting to anything it hasn't consumed at all for 8 years. It would also happen with berries, salad, anything. You really aren't eating much bread. Maybe you need to give it a bit longer to settle down?

You say you have bloating problems anyway. How much worse has it become? And how much weight have you put on?

I bloat horribly with wheat, especially bread.
Hormonal changes like peri menopause can make you intolerant of foods you were previously ok with too.

Never reacted to bread in the past but since being low carb if I eat bread now (several years later) I bloat up like a balloon, within a couple of hours I look about 6 months pregnant its crazy. So I have just had to stop again despite the fact that a nice cheese salad sandwich is one of my favourite things!

My DD is like that if she has sourdough. Regular bread she has no issues and eats hesps of it. So it might be your gut trying to get used to the different micro-organisms in the sourdough. Maybe have a break for a few days then try having a slice every couple of days instead of every day and see if it's different. You might be able to build back up to it.

Thanks, will cut down and see what happens.

Curiously i gained weight for the first time in my life during the first lockdown. It seemed I had added crackers and wheat to my diet during that time, and the only really new thing was hydrogenated oils.
There's none of that in my sourdough though! So no idea.
perhaps it is a coincidence, so will cut back again for a bit and see.

Bread puffs me up like a painful balloon. Awful delicious stuff.

How old are you? I put on weight now completely differently to how I did (well, I just didn’t) a decade ago.
