DC refusing medicine

DC is refusing medicine

I've tried to get him to take it and even tried crushing it and putting it into coke, but he won't have it

He's always had it crushed into something but reverently he's started tasting it

He won't even see me do it. But he will then take a sip of whatever it is and knows straight away now!

He has autism so you can't use bribery in his case

What on earth can I do? GP said asked OT. OT team have said I need to be speaking to his OT, but she's on AL until next week

Sometimes you can't pretend and sneak medicine in and have to be upfront about it. Sit down with him and explain what the medicine is for, how it will help and what could happen if it doesn't take it. Ask his opinion on how he would prefer to take it, ie drink or food and which he thinks would mask it the most with his taste buds. We all taste foods differently.

Be matter of fact about it, he has to do it (same sort of approach as starting school, they can kick off all they like but bottom line is they are going).

Best food my mum used to do was crush tablets into powder and mix it with a teaspoon of raspberry jam with the bits. Have a glass of water ready so they can wash/swallow any remnants away. Good luck.

@Pixiedust1234 thank you x

But DS is autistic and doesn't understand his name being called, let alone what medicine is or the importance of it

Is it regular medication? How old/big is he? Could you give it in something new (if he would accept it) so he doesn’t know it tastes different. The SEN board maybe more helpful.
