Anyone ever suddenly gone off alcohol, especially wine?

Ok maybe it's not 'suddenly' but my DC3 is 6 months old and before she was born I was a fan of wine. Not a bottle a night or anything but pretty much never turned down a glass, went to wine tastings, wine at a restaurant, and prosecco or champagne made a regular appearance for any occasion really.

Since the baby was born I've had a few glasses over the months and they have all tasted rank. Absolutely horrible. They all taste like vinegar. The first one I thought was maybe just not a nice bottle but I've now had about 6 glasses over the 6 months and they were all as nasty as the last. The final straw was a glass of champagne at my mum's yesterday which was like fizzy vinegar.

What's happened? Do I need to wean myself back onto it...? I never had this after either of my other kids.

I had this the first few months after my son was born, was back on the wine by the time he was 1 I think. He's nearly 4 now and I LOVE wine ... too much BlushWine

This is by far the oddest post regarding alcohol o have ever seen.

No, don't wean yourself on to wine Confused

😂 I just meant keep drinking it occasionally in the hope I start to like it again. I didn't really like it when I first started drinking and began to like it more the more I drank it. That's quite a normal experience I think?!

It could be hormonal. It happened to some of my friends during peri menopause

So I guess it could happen postpartum too

I have no idea why, btw

Have you had Covid recently?

WhiskeyAndGinger · 18/04/2022 18:31

I used to really love a glass of wine. Since the menopause I just can't handle it. White wine taste like vinegar and red wine makes me feel lousy. I do miss the enjoyment I used to get from it but my waistline is grateful!

OriginalM · 18/04/2022 18:37

I've not gone off wine but after turning over 40 I can't even drink one glass without feeling sleepy and rubbish the next day. It's bizarre I was never a big drinker before but could have 3 glasses of wine and no side effects but now I can't have any without me regretting it.
Never knew it was a thing going through peri menopause and you can't tolerate it anymore?

Is it? To drink something you don't like, alcoholic, to try and get to like it?

I would say that is absolutely not normal at all.

HandlebarLadyTash · 18/04/2022 18:51

I have hated wine since the birth of my second, all other varietys of alcohol are ok

porridgecake · 18/04/2022 18:55

Only when pregnant...

StarCourt · 18/04/2022 19:39

I'm 55 and have rapidly gone off wine during the last 12 mths. I fancy a glass then find I don't want it, if I do drink some it's pretty much instant headache. No idea why

IntergalacticChrist · 18/04/2022 19:49

I am late 30s so anything hormonal would probably more likely be postpartum than menopause I guess. I don't remember this with either of the first 2 DC.

I have had covid quite a few times now - most recently in February. Could it be that?

No but that happened to me with bananas when I was pregnant. Haven’t eaten one since.

LadyHelenaJustina · 18/04/2022 21:31

I haven’t been able to tolerate red wine after having my first child (17 years ago). Strictly white only now.

BertieBotts · 18/04/2022 21:45

I'm the same, can't be bothered with alcohol since DS2 really. DS3 is now 8mo and still can't be arsed. It just makes me feel tired.

I think what you describe is normal when first drinking alcohol, certainly that's what it was like for me in my teens and early 20s. Liked getting drunk but didn't really like alcohol. Took a few years to appreciate it for what it is.

Anyway I'm not drinking at the moment and I'm happy not to drink until DC are older and not breastfeeding/cosleeping so much. I guess I'll see if I like it again by then?

Nope, not happened to me! My kids are way way older now but my taste buds still tell me wine is good 😆 maybe try gin, or something sweeter for a little while?

Lightning020 · 14/08/2022 15:03

By my mid 40s I had lost the taste for it. I am now 58. Menopause was 2 years ago and only just recently started enjoying a twice monthly glass of wine.

JulesJules · 14/08/2022 15:11

This happened to me, red wine tasted like mouldy old vinegar the first time I was pregnant. Second pregnancy it was white (non sparkling) wine too and I can still only drink prosecco or champagne - my children are now 20 and 17! Sorry OP!
