Keep a spare bed made up?

We have a spare bedroom. It's doubled as many things over the years and always needs a last minute tidy before guests come (every 6 to 8 weeks), and then it's still not very nice. I also use it when insomnia tips me over the edge. So I'm thrilled that we're finally sorting it out. Here's my question. I'd like to keep the bed made. It will look cosy, pretty, will be a welcome retreat during bouts of insomnia ... but will it just get dusty? If you have a spare bedroom, do you keep the bed made up?

We have a wall bed which folds up and doubles into a weights rack for our home gym. Means the room isn’t wasted space and also means the bed doesn’t get dusty - which yes, yours will, as anything that sits in place without being used for months on end does.

Mum2jenny · 15/04/2022 20:36

Yes, I keep the spare bed made up. Why wouldn’t you?

Xfox · 15/04/2022 20:37

Yes. Bit it mostly gets cat hairy, so I have to wash it every so often.

Could you place a blanket or throw over the made bed to keep any dust off ? Handy to have it made.

stillsmilingtoday · 15/04/2022 20:38

Make it up and put a cover over it that you can remove if you need to climb in in the middle of the night. I have a spare bed made up for that purpose and haven’t noticed it get dusty at all but I do vacuum the room along with everywhere else. Definitely wouldn’t want to have to make the bed in the middle of the night!

Antarcticant · 15/04/2022 20:39

Yes, put something over it as pp said. A sheet would do the job.

RosesAndHellebores · 15/04/2022 20:39

Yes. You could pop a sheet or throw over it if you are worried about dust.

Sagegreenvelvet · 15/04/2022 20:39

Yes always keep it made up. It looks so much better. The cleaner cleans the room with the rest of the house. I have a blanket folded on the end and before someone stays I just fluff it all up and air the room etc.

Kezzie200 · 15/04/2022 20:41

Yes we do.

I cleaned it today actually. It rarely really needs anything doing as it gets cleaned when someone leaves, but I happened to be in there today and so gave it a wipe around. Took minutes literally

dudsville · 15/04/2022 20:51

A throw! Great idea. Fwiw, I do vacuum and dust when I clean generally, and it will be even easier to do once the work's been done and it's just a proper room, but re dust in the bed the throw is a great idea!

I keep it made up and looking as pretty as I can. But I also occasionally use the room to iron so the printing board is up and there is some laundry on the bed right now!

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 15/04/2022 20:58

Yes we keep our spare bed made up.
My DH likes to lay on it and read in the day. And when one of us is not sleeping well we sleep in separate beds for a night or two.
No I've never seen it get dusty - that wouldn't have occurred to me actually!

Forkandknife23 · 15/04/2022 21:02

I keep it made up as it looks better but always wash and remake it before (planned) guests arrive.

When we had one we kept it made up. We have pets and our cat thought it was his bed Hmm so it got hairy. I’d clean the room as part of the weekly clean but only change bedding ever 6-8 weeks depending on how often I used it (and fresh bedding before and after every guest). It was great for when I couldn’t sleep and when one of us is ill.

RosesAndHellebores · 15/04/2022 21:12

@Catmummyof2 I very nearly put counterpane but used throw instead thinking nobody would know what a counterpane was. Grin

Norgie · 15/04/2022 21:14

Mine are always made up, but they have throws over them too.
I damp dust the rooms when I can be bothered, which is rarely.

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/04/2022 21:15

We do, though we’ve not had visitors in two years so I’ll have to strip and wash it all again when we do 😁
In the meantime, though, they look nice when I go in.

Benjispruce4 · 15/04/2022 21:16

I don’t have a spare room as such but when DD is at uni I change the bed then keep a throw over it until she returns. I’d one of us uses the bed due to illness then I’d change it again before DD returns.

cherrypiepie · 15/04/2022 21:33

Yes needs to made up - what would you do if it wasn't made up? It would be a bare mattress, pillows and duvet which would get all dusty.

I have done a few things in the past. Cover with a throw and if just for guest wash before they arrive so if it does get dusty it's not too much hassle. If you want to use it for bouts of poor sleep just keep it made up and wash as abs when.

We always cover our spare bed with a flat sheet, with a lenor tumble dryer sheet underneath. Keeps it smelling fresh.
