Hot cross buns.

Do you have traditional or one of the modern variants? I'm not a big fan but I used to buy the Belgian chocolate variety from Morrison's - excellent toasted and buttered but appalling calorie content.

Are they any good cold or do they have to be toasted or heated ? What are they like with toppings like jam or peanut butter ?

I really like the m and s cheese and marmite ones. They shouldn’t be called hot cross buns though. Too far from the originals!

The Waitrose apple ones are amazing! I accidentally ate 3 in a row yesterday. Whole, without butter.

Is Simnel cake still an Easter tradition ? I've never tried it myself.

Nice with cheese. Haven’t seen a simnel cake in years.

Talipesmum · 14/04/2022 15:31

Yes - we have some this year. I’m a big marzipan fan so always make sure of stollen at Christmas and simnel cake at Easter!

Talipesmum · 14/04/2022 15:31

(That was in reply to “is simnel cake still a thing!”)

Stringervest · 14/04/2022 15:35

Marks and Spencer don't seem to be doing their chilli cheese ones this year and I can't forgive them for it

howthebellstoll · 14/04/2022 15:38

I love them all, toasted or untoasted. I tend to buy the ordinary fruit ones as the chocolate ones tend to be much more calorific (tesco used to do a chocolate orange one but haven't seen it in my store this year)

jellybe · 14/04/2022 15:40

All about the traditional ones here. Toasted with lots of butter and a bit of salt on top (don't buy salted butter normally so add it on these).

In reply to the simnel cake question, I made one today...

And hot cross buns, I like trad fruit style, toasted and plenty of butter 😋

Readytostartagain · 14/04/2022 16:15

Thanks @Crazycatlady202020 and @IchBinAnnaOfCleves I will try m&s gluten free ones

Pedallleur · 14/04/2022 16:27

Our local Italian cfe/deli make their own. 80p each, only available at Easter. Fantastic and a yearly treat. Full of spices and fruit.

WildRosie · 14/04/2022 17:16

The Simnel cake looks excellent. I suppose the dried fruit and spices elements of HCBs are healthy enough. Not sure about fructose or fat content though.

The rhubarb ones from Aldi are nice too

WildRosie · 15/04/2022 13:26

I've bought some 'extremely chocolatey' HCBs from M&S this morning. I might try one later.
