First pregnancy - Help!

Hi all.

I just found out that I am pregnant with my first baby a couple of days ago.
I have called my Gp and got an appointment with a doctor. I was also given the phone number for the local Midwife services. I have filled out the form online and just waiting for them to call me back.
I feel a little bit helpless now and don't know what else I need to do.
I'm 4 weeks +6days.

thanks x

@Elleare

Hello - firstly congratulations!

You've done all you can do for now. You're still very early, but if you are ever worried about anything you can always call your GP. You can also go private for early scans.

All you need to do now is sit tight and they will contact you.

I hope this helps.!

You don’t need to see the doctor. To be honest unless you have health conditions that you take regular medication for I would cancel that appointment.
You probably won’t see the midwife for booking in until you’re at least 7 weeks, but this can be anywhere between 7 & 12 weeks.
It can seem such a long wait. Buy folic acid tablets and stay away from Google.
Good luck!

@Mumofloulou21 @FelicityPike
Thank you both so much for the advice!

I've been so worried thinking I'm not doing the right things, I can't sleep. I wanted to get a scan done asap really just to see if everything is ok. might go private for this.

Congratulations!

I can remember calling my midwives as soon as I got a positive pregnancy test and being told to call back once I was 8 weeks to make a booking appointment. I was told no need to see GP unless there were any health conditions as home pregnancy tests are very accurate so there's nothing else they can do.

Where I am the first scan is 12-14 weeks unless there are any complications, but my sister paid for an early scan at 8 weeks with both of hers which she found really reassuring.
I remember it all felt a bit unreal at first as I didn't get symptoms straight away

Best wishes for a happy and healthy pregnancy.

The gp used to just book you in with the midwives. I remember being surprised that they didn't do a pregnancy test or anything! Nowadays, you just self refer to the midwifery service in a lot of places. Makes sense because the gp doesn't actually do anything.

Take the folic acid, contact the midwives and wait.

You might want to get some crackers by your bed. When my morning sickness started, I used to find it helpful to have a cracker before I attempted getting up. In those early weeks I was also too knackered to do anything other than work and brush my teeth. It soon eases uo though, if you don't have the extreme version.

Congratulations Flowers

I would definitely book a private scan I did when I was pregnant with my boy, I went in thinking I was only going to be 6 weeks and it turned out I was ten, and it was so reassuring to see his little heart beat and him being okay. I had a lot of anxiety about being pregnant so it helped me alot Smile

@JuneOsborne @Bloatstoat @ljdxxx
Thank you all.
I'm so glad we have pages like this and I can talk to you lovely ladies. The receptionist at the doctors really upset me on the phone the other day, she was technically the first person I told apart from my partner and she basically just said 'what do you want me to do about it'
they don't teach you what you have to do once you get pregnant, your just out here trying to understand!
But I will definitely book in for an early scan, just to put my mind at ease and make me feel like it's real!

@Elleare I had a private scan at 6 weeks and 10 weeks, I then the 3 month as normal. It just put my mind at ease. Try not to let it consume you too much though - just enjoy being pregnant.

Sending you lots of love xx

Congratulations! As others have said you'll likely have a booking in appt with the midwives around 8-9 weeks.

Ideally folic acid should be started prior to conception but not to worry if you haven't been, just start now.
Just to note if your BMI is over 30 then a higher dose of folic acid (5mg) is recommended so you may want to phone the GP and ask for this on prescription if so.
