Anyone else awake?

I'm at my wits end with my 1 year old DS who won't settle due to constant coughing. I've tried feeding him to sleep, water, Calpol, rocking, everything!

I have some weird sensory thing where the sound of coughing puts me on edge, akin to nails down a blackboard sort of feeling. Trying to be calm but it's been hours and I'm so fed up Sad.

Anyone else awake/still awake/having a disturbed night?

Can you sit in the bathroom with the shower on super hot? The steam often helps clear the lungs and the sound of the water could put them to sleep!

Indoorcatmum · 13/04/2022 03:22

Also slightly warm water rather than cold helps!

MollieSheep1 · 13/04/2022 03:25

@Indoorcatmum excellent idea! He seems to be settling now (fingers crossed) but another thing to try when he inevitably wakes himself up coughing again.

Sorry, I meant slightly warm water to DRINK, in case that wasn't clear.. I clearly need to go to sleep lol. I hope you get some rest soon Smile

My sympathies. I really hope he’s better soon. I used to sit all night with DD at this age laying on me basically surrounded by pillows for support. It’s such a terrible feeling of hopelessness when they are unwell. I’m awake due to cough myself atm and it’s awful; put extra pillow, gargle salt water, put scarf around my neck…nothing. DH is coughing too. We all had some sort of virus. DD was the first one with temperature and so on and had antibiotics, she’s coughing less. I had it really lightly but the cough now is absolutely killing.

greenlynx · 13/04/2022 03:44

By the way if it’s a cold we’ve used Salin spray for DD, it was the only thing that helped.

Hi Mollie, I’ve got no advice for you I’m afraid, but just wanted to send you a massive hug of support and encouragement.
I’m awake as I have sleep issues, as have many people.
My darling oh can sleep on a washing line, so I’m pretty alone in the wee small hour’s.
Can you distract yourself with some funny you tube clips?
That way, if your little one needs you, you won’t be losing the thread of a tv drama or film for instance if the coughing begins again.
Maybe by distracting yourself, you won’t focus on the feelings sounds of coughing gives you.
Awww bless you, it sounds like you’re having a ‘mare of a night.
I’m going to be up for a while I think. Probably try crossword puzzles til my head nods!!!
Wishing you a “goodnight” hope it happens soon for you.

Humidifier helps also (not helpful now if you haven’t got one but definitely worth getting)

Just been up with DS 20 months coughing too. He wanted milk and a cuddle. He's in his cot now and hopefully with get into a deep sleep. Now my mine has turned to work and I can't sleep.

LoganPaw · 13/04/2022 04:40

Up with a feverish baby after first jabs, knackered. Hope you manage to get a bit of sleep before the morning.

Sideorderofchips · 13/04/2022 04:42

I'm awake. Got pre travel anxiety that my alarm won't go off. And my phone vibrated to tell me it was switching itself off which woke me in a panic as that's my alarm

Youvegotafriendinme · 13/04/2022 05:02

I’m awake too. Been awake since about 3:30. DD 14 months woke crying for some reason. Quick nappy change and some water and she’s back in her bed but every now and then she starts talking to herself and I can’t sleep knowing she’s still awake.Hmm then DS just came in needing his asthma pump and some more medicine. He’s come down with chicken pox and feeling very sorry for himself. I guess by now I won’t actually get back to sleep

123feraverto · 13/04/2022 05:54

Yep staying in a travel lodge

when baby is finally asleep 4 year old starts fidgeting and kicking out in his sleep

Whilst partner sleeps soundly in the single bed

MollieSheep1 · 13/04/2022 10:14

Gosh, what a rough night. Sorry to hear that a few others were awake at that time too and I hope some sleep was had! DS settled at about 4am I think (I'd stopped clock watching by then) and older DS came in yelling at about 6:30 for me to get up. Oh the joys.
Hopefully tonight will be better. Thanks for the tips on how to handle the coughing as well. DS seems a bit better today although is still very snotty.
