Grand National

A 4th horse has died after this year’s Grand National. He sustained head injuries. Only 8 years old. It’s such a brutal race. I don’t know very much about horse racing but when you read about horses being seriously injured or killed, it’s shocking. I don’t think horses are meant to race. You can see the jockeys whipping them to make them go faster. Does anyone think that The Grand National should stop or maybe even all horse racing? Obviously the bookies are against that as they must make millions!

I agree. I think it is cruel. Those poor horses are running their hearts out, giving their all and the jockeys are whipping them to the finishing line. I refuse to watch it.

It's disgusting and needs to end.

Danikm151 · 10/04/2022 23:47

It’s horrible but will carry on as long as the money keeps rolling in.

Oh whoopy do. The millionth thread on this.

Ever thought about starting an original thread?

It’s 4 after the Grand National meet - 2 who raced in the Grand National itself and two others from other races that ran that weekend.

It’s 4 too many and I don’t deny it needs to be stopped - but it’s important to be accurate. Racehorses die after meets all the time, it isn’t more or less tragic after one race than another.

I’m more comfortable with flat racing, am becoming more uncomfortable with jump/hurdle racing - especially with a field as large as the GN.

I’d support a ban on jump racing - and then let the numbers do the talking re casualties in flat racing.

Just move on whoopy!
SpaghettiSquash · 11/04/2022 02:59

Yes, it should be banned along with greyhound racing.

MissMaple82 · 11/04/2022 03:00

It's disgusting, yet I have horsey friends who just adore it! I can't understand that, riding horses and racing them are two very different things. I won't lie, its changed the way I view these friends.

Please can these threads be moved to their own topic. They trigger huge anxiety. I refuse to watch the race and I don't want to keep being reminded.

Tbh, there’s issues with both. I have more issues with flat racing than National Hunt

IMO, for flat racing, they’re started far too young. At least with national hunt racing they’re started much later.

VeniVidiWeeWee thank you for your constructive input. I hadn’t actually seen any other threads on this!

The thread title is hardly salacious. It just says "Grand National". Is that sufficient to trigger you? Should the name of the race never be on public display?
