Funeral - WWYD

A reasonably close family member to me has just died. It is important to me to be at her funeral. I am close to her young adult children.

Funeral is 3.5 hours drive away. It is in Easter holidays. Had it been in term time, we would have arranged friends to take and collect children from school and both me and
DW would have gone and shared driving.

As it is in the holidays, and we have no one to take the children for the day, we have limited options. Also I can’t manage that amount of driving on my own and we have pets that can’t be left overnight. Public transport also not possible as funeral itself will be in rural location half an hours drive from the city (Making it a 4 hour journey in total)

So options AFAIK see are:

We all go for the day. Children are upper primary age. They’ve never been to a funeral. They have only met the relative once although know the young adult children well.

I travel up the evening before, stay in a hotel and travel back after the funeral.

WWYD?

I’d go down together and have DH look after the kids down there whilst you go to the funeral.

Or is there only half an hour doing it via public transport? In which case I’d do that. Is it not possible all in one day?

Sorry I meant half an hour difference (3.5 - 4 hours)

Travel up the evening before on your own.

Alternatively if you are close to the adult children who live near to where the funeral is, could you explain your dilemma and now of them may offer to have you stay the night before?

travel up the evening before, stay in a hotel & travel back the next day

Go on your own across the 2 days

Thanks. The extra half hour is not doable by public transport. No one has space in cars so It would be taxi both ways, ruled out due to cost.

I’m definitely leaning towards going on my own. Actually, a night in a hotel alone sounds quite appealing!
