Landlord References .

In Aus a man from TikTok has strayed a movement of requesting references from Landlords. This has now been picked up by a politician in ACT who wishes to make it law.

Should a similar movement be started within The UK where tenants may request references to ensure the landlord is lawful and fair?

He covers the power imbalance and the issue with rogue landlords etc.

Yes, absolutely! I have thought this for a long time!

In a tenants’ market I think this is a great idea. But in London at least demand for rentals far outweighs availability - tenants don’t have the luxury of being able to negotiate their terms.

How would that work?
There is a power imbalance and existing tenants are unlikely to give poor references.
Also every rental in UK is hugely oversubscribed.
A registration scheme for landlords would be more reasonable.

I guess we can see how it works in Aus. But overall I think highlighting poor landlords who do not sufficiently maintain their properties may help.

I don’t think it would work here.

The last time we had to find a new rental property, we were up against 12 other applicants.

The landlord could have been Freddy Krueger for all I cared, I just didn’t want to end up homeless.
