Best beginner sign language

Hi my son has a school friend a really lovely boy and his parents are both deaf, he and his siblings aren't. I wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of the best way to learn some sign language to converse with them? She can lip read and her children all sign. I taught my son the basics of please and thank you for when he goes to their house, just from google. But I feel it would be polite to at least attempt to learn some basic conversation? Her son always translates of needed but I'd like to at least try to learn? Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is a book better or will YouTube videos do?

Thanks

Do they use BSL or makaton? We use a mixture which is probably wrong. Lots of children learn through Mr tumble, that maybe a good way to start

Have sent the thread link to my ds2... He is BSL and Makaton fluent... 💙

I did courses with my local college which were really good and you of course get to practice with real people. Online, Signature does an introductory course for £10, and I’ve recently done a refresher course with bslcourses which was good as a refresher. There’s also lots of YouTube channels, I like Commanding Hands as the videos are very clear and he repeats each sign a few times.

Oh I’ve just remembered, I got some training DVDs when I first did Level 1 - I can’t find them online now but there are some online stories on the Signature website in the shop section.

Hi everyone I am @Elderflower14 ds2.

I will tell you my experience about signing.

The first sign language I learnt was Makaton because I watched Dave Benson Phillips nursery rhymes video and I learnt signing from him then when I went to school I learnt BSL signing and then few years later Mr Tumble came on tv and I had to learn Makaton signing again along with Singing Hands and that is how I doing well with my communication using signing and I have passed my level 2 signing and hoping to do my BSL level 3 signing too. I am deaf and autistic
