Assalamo alaikum and Ramadan Mubarak to those fasting! I thought we could have a thread to support each other and have some general Ramadan chat. Others are free to ask questions too x

I wish I’d made a menu for the month! Altho this thread is giving me lots of amazing ideas for foods to try Inshallah.

I love trying food from different cultures. My kids are k-pop crazy so I’ve found halal recipes for Korean food, yesterday we had beef bulgogi which DH made, because it’s well steak. And he’s the steak expert 🤣

Today is (Indian) daal pilau, which is lamb curry with three type of pulses eaten with rice. It’s my go to comfort food.

I tend not to go all out with extra side dishes, altho my kids insist samosas, potato chops and falooda are apparently our tradition! So we did the prep for those the night before the first fast. And I’ve got a freezer full of samosas which we fry each night.

We have a Quran completion competition between us each year, and we also complete a Quran together. I have a Quran which is split into booklets by juz so we each recite juz at our own speed but this way we are all part of completing a full recitation even if the individual has not got the time/ability/speed to finish a full recitation of the Quran themselves.

This year for some reason I’m just so tired, I’m really greatful to be WFH still and my DC started their half Easter break this week so we’ve had a relatively calm week.

Have you all decorated your houses? My DC love decorating our house for Ramadan and we also sent out dates from the date project to our friends at the start of Ramadan all proceeds go to charity and the tins are so beautiful.

I’m really glad this thread is here but I would also like an muslim forum as I always look for a Ramadan thread and usually each year there are threads making dogs and deriding fasting and Ramadan.

It’s nice to have support and sharing understanding and recipes and experiences with other Muslim MNers for a change.

Making digs not dogs

mubarak86 · 09/04/2022 14:56

@frazzeledasarock my dc are big but this is the first year we decorated for Ramadan. We always go all out for Eid, but after seeing so many lovely instagram pics last year of Ramadan decorations I thought I'd make the effort this year.

First fast for me today. Really feeling it.

I love all your ramadhan routines, they sound great. Today we’re having instant pot salt and pepper chops with chips and salad. Dd1 has made pizza twists and I’ll probably make some onion bhajis. We’ve been shopping today so picked up some yummy brownies for a sugary treats.

H1978 · 09/04/2022 16:35

@mubarak86 that sounds lovely. We’ve still got our star/crescent moon lights up from last year. We love using them everyday.

sashh · 11/04/2022 06:05

Hi all, thank you for the kind words.

I'm putting a link to another thread - someone wanting ideas of what they can get for their Muslim neighbours.

Mubarak Ramadan to you all.

TrustInTheOne · 11/04/2022 13:40

Salam aleikum this is a great idea to be able to connect with other sisters that are Muslim and fasting allahumdulilah 😊💜

TrustInTheOne · 11/04/2022 13:53

Salam aleikum sister... I am also a revert so sending you supportive vibes! How have you been getting on?
I'm finding each day slightly easier, I'd say the loneliness is the hardest part.
Its so lovely reading everyone's Ramadan experiences and how full of family and love it all sounds allhumdulilah 💜
May Allah give us the strength to do this alone ameen 💕

TrustInTheOne · 11/04/2022 13:56

@jazzyjazz22 that last message was to you! And any other reverts!

Nadamar · 11/04/2022 14:23

Asalaam Alaikum
Lovely to see so many here, I am also a revert, finding this year tiring.
Lovely recipes posted would love to see more Smile

mubarak86 · 11/04/2022 15:11

Salam sisters, can you believe we are one third through already subhanAllah?! I've been having some sisters/family iftar over the weekend which has been really nice alhamdulillah. It really lifts your spirits and gives you a sense of sisterhood.
Tonight's menu:
Dates and mango lassi
Lamb shorba
Pakora
Sheesh kebabs

Dd made a gorgeous biscoff tiramasu yesterday so we'll be finishing that off for dessert.

must be nice to have company at iftar. sending love and support to all those like me fasting alone it is lonely. it is still nice to know there are others also alone and at least with this thread there is a sense of connection. also interesting to see the various foods and recipes as it can give an indication of people's backgrounds

H1978 · 13/04/2022 21:21

I’ve heard of places where people who are on their own can come together with others for iftar. Not sure which areas they are on but you could find out from local community groups.

Dh has gone for umrah for 12 days so it’s just me and dcs. They don’t eat too much so I’m keeping it simple so there not much food left and I can cook fresh each day.

yummytummy · 13/04/2022 21:31

H1978 i have heard that too but the trouble is with iftar time relatively late and young kids who can't be left it is very difficult to be able to attend such things. that is good your dh has had a chance for umrah and keeping it simple food wise sounds good. you can never eat as much as you think you can!

H1978 · 13/04/2022 22:33

True it is hard with young kids. It can get late and past their bedtime too.

Kids like simple food so cooking is easy for a few days at least. Really missing dh though. He loves different foods so it motivates me to be more adventurous with recipes.

mubarak86 · 13/04/2022 23:36

@yummytummy I feel you about being alone 💐 I had 3 Ramadans on my own after I reverted before I got married and it was tough. Can you not bring the dc to the mosque with you? When mine were young I took them in their jammies and they loved staying up later.

Workyticket · 13/04/2022 23:43

Hi all - hope you don't mind me posting

I've been invited to an Iftar celebration by one of my students and I'd like to ask about the etiquette

It's at a community centre. Should I take a gift? What should I wear? What should I expect?

She's lovely and I want to go and don't want to embarrass her infront of her friends and family 🙂

frazzledasarock · 13/04/2022 23:55

Community centre iftars tend not to have one host. Loads of people from the community pitch in and provide food, everyone helps clean up afterwards.

Wear clothes that cover your arms and legs and I’d have a scarf in my bag to cover my head too. Altho you won’t be expected to as a non Muslim.

There will probably be a religious sermon and everyone will break fast with a date and water at dusk. Then everyone will pray then dinner will begin.

Ask the person who invited you if you can take a gift. I’d have thought not really.

So I’ve been taking inspiration from this thread for meal planning. We had chicken shwarma a couple of days ago. Had oven cooked sweet chilli salmon tonight with veg.

For everyone going through Ramadan alone may Allah make it easy for you.

How’s everyone finding the fasting so far. Fasts are Alhumdulillah easy this year but I’m currently so tired. I don’t know why. Can’t believe we’re nearly half way through already.

VyeBrator · 14/04/2022 00:00

@Jobseeker19

I would love to have an Islam sub section on mumsnet. Instead of having to explain that a 6 year old isn't actually fasting.

I'm having to wade through just to find posts from actual Muslims.

Ahh you must've missed this bit in the OP

Others are free to ask questions too x

flashbac · 26/04/2022 17:16

Last week of Ramadan already! What are you having tonight?
I'm going for chicken puff pastry parcels.

mubarak86 · 26/04/2022 17:55

I know @flashbac cant believe it's nearly over 😭. I'm 'off' these days so just been going to masjid for iftar and will continue to do so until Eid. May Allah accept it from us!

Speaking of Eid, any plans? Our masjid has a garden party thing with BBQ so we'll spend the day there.

Ramadan Mubarak to everyone observing.

May I ask when Eid is? I thought it was Sunset Monday to Sunset Tuesday, but I have seen that in some countries Eid has already been announced due to the sighting of the moon?

I have some gifts for Muslim neighbours and would like to give them on the correct day. Thank you.

MumstedInadequate · 01/05/2022 16:10

I'm glad to have seen this thread so I can ask a question.

I've got lovely Muslim neighbours who really spoil me with beautiful food deliveries most days during Ramadan. We're friendly all year and often share things we've cooked, though tbh they share much more with us, not least because they have some dietary restrictions plus eat halal which rules a lot of the food I cook out.

Anyway I wanted to give them a little present for Eid. Last 2 years I gave a nice box of dates and a card made by my daughter. This year i couldn't find dates so bought some nice chocolates instead. Feels stupid to ask but I gathered dates were traditional, is chocolate an OK gift too? Or would it be better to avoid food gifts in future?

I have other questions but have forgotten them for now, I may be back

Eid will be on Monday for those following Saudi. For those who aren't we don't know yet. Depends on Morocco or if the crescent moon is sighted here (Morocco because its on the same timeline).
