I'm attending my sons wedding this summer, here in the US, and have asked a lovely Ethiopian lady as my plus one. Would it be appropriate for her to wear traditional Ethiopian attire? It's beautiful, colourful and quite flamboyant.

Double check with your son but sounds wonderful to me! Can’t see what the problem would be, definitely wouldn’t be unreasonable to ask him (or the bride).

Has a dress code been stipulated?

My sister had a Japanese lady at her wedding in full Japanese attire, she looked stunning. She did stand out but no one minded and my sister has more photos of them together than of her and her husband. (Sister requested all the photos)

Does she normally wear Ethiopian clothing? If that's what your son and the rest of your family are used to seeing her in, then there's absolutely no problem. However, if she normally dresses conservatively and in a UK style, there is a risk (thinking the worst here) that she could be seen by some as taking attention from the bride.

I'm sure that lots of people would admire her, of course. But on the other hand it's probably the bride's appearance that should be everyone's focus.

Really it's your son and his fiancee that you should ask.

Absolutely yes! If it is the type of dress/shawl I am thinking of, it will look fabulous
