I went on a hen do to Benidorm and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. Lovely beaches, very clean. The usually stag and hen do's seem to stick to their all inclusive hotels in the daytime so the beaches were actually really lovely and mostly frequented locals or the calmer sets of friends hen/stag. Quite a few families too.
The night life is typical hen/stag though but old town is very nice.

Why go to Benidorm if you don't think you'll like it?

It's not like Spain is short of places to go on holiday, many of which will have the things you want (beach, sun?) and little or none of what you think makes it 'bad'.

Why not say what you do and don't want and people will suggest somewhere that fits the bill Smile.

Vampirethriller · 29/03/2022 08:20

I had a really lovely holiday in Benidorm. Stayed in the old town and in a hotel with mostly Spanish guests. I was surprised how clean it is! Absolutely spotless.

lapasion · 29/03/2022 08:20

There’s good and bad. The new part is pretty much what people expect from Benidorm. High rise hotels and shit pubs. IIRC, old town is nice in places, once you get away from the bit with crap nightclubs. However, get a bus or taxi and there are nice areas nearby like Altea and Calpe. I’d recommend either embracing the Benidorm vibe and enjoying it, or staying nearby and just going in for day trips!

Iputthetrampintrampoline · 29/03/2022 08:23

I like Benidorm,It doesn;t have to be banging nightlife and drunken people, It can be anything you like it to be. pick a fabulous hotel and explore, there is lots to do and see, You Tube have lots of blogs and videos from people who live and work there I would invest some time and watch a few of those it might give you a better idea,

hellcatspangle · 29/03/2022 08:24

Why not just go somewhere else if it "might be as bad as you think"? Personally I didn't like it (the beach is lovely but I'm not a fan of high rise places) but my MIL loves it. Each to their own.

What type of place DO you like?

Fedupbuyer · 29/03/2022 08:27

I live in northern Spain. It's still hot and sunny in September (mid 20s) Costa brava Costa Barcelona will still be perfect.

maddy68 · 29/03/2022 08:38

Canaries are guaranteed hot then

axolotlfloof · 29/03/2022 08:39

We went in October. It's a big town and quite built up.
The beach is nice though.
I think that hotel is further out.
We stayed in Magic sister hotel in the Old Town.
It was mostly Spanish guests, and no drunk English.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/03/2022 08:43

Much of Spain will be still hot in September Confused

There's endless choice of accommodation and types of holiday on offer.

Absolutely no reason to go to Benidorm if you don't think you'll like it.

Costa del Sol will also be hot hot hot (probably hotter than Benidorm) and there's several waterparks. Some parts of Benalmadena, Torremolinos and Fuengirola are popular with the 'AI Brits on the Piss' crowd, but not all places and Fuengirola at least is popular with many nationalities, including Spaniards.

20viona · 29/03/2022 08:46

I love Benidorm it's great fun and the beaches are nice and clean. For September though I'd go tenerife.

goldensilver · 29/03/2022 08:47

Canaries would be a much better bet. Or the Algarve.
I visited Benidorm when I was younger and it was "as expected". I would never go back if I'm being honest.

Winebottle · 29/03/2022 09:02

I like it but it is how I expected it. Beach, sun and cheap beer. If that's what you are looking for, it is fine but don't expect high culture.

I was surprised by how many Spanish go there, I would have expected them to have deserted the place decades ago.

The old town is more Spanish and less English but wouldn't say it's particularly nice. No nicer than any other Spanish town.

SpicePumpkin · 29/03/2022 09:17

Mallorca is also very nice and still hot in September.

Fedupbuyer · 29/03/2022 09:27

Thank you everyone for your advice and recommendations,
No I don’t think I would like Benidorm,it’s not my cup of tea the drunken Brit’s,high rise hotels,
I was trying to be less of a holiday snob Hmmand go out of my comfort zone!

I like Benidorm and have been going since I was a child. I love the old town and also the surrounding towns and villages. It is more than just one road. Lovely climate there as well.

I also really like Salou as well, but it won't be as warm as Benidorm in Sep.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/03/2022 09:34

We stayed in Albir (could only afford a budget holiday at Easter a few years back and found a one with a water park).

We bussed into Benidorm to do the Animal Park for the day which was easy.

Gowithme · 29/03/2022 10:42

I quite liked Benidorm (although it was a lot of years ago that I went!) Much more family orientated than I expected but definitely not somewhere I'd go back to over and over. If you're after a cheap, easy drop and flop with lots of sun though then why not.

Gowithme · 29/03/2022 10:45

I agree with Mallorca - I much preferred it to Lanzarote. But if you do go to Lanzarote or the Canaries be careful where you stay if you don't like the idea of Benidorm.

Trying81 · 29/03/2022 11:48

Greece / Cyprus will be hot then

Benidorm is fun for a girls trip / drinking holiday, for a main holiday - not so much

BarbaraofSeville · 29/03/2022 11:53

@Gowithme

Also be careful about Mallorca. If you want to avoid Benidorm, you also don't want to go to Magaluf.

Most places in Spain (and Greece, plus other places, eg I've often heard Bali as being described as Benidorm for Australians, there's also probably places in Mexico that are the same for the US market) have towns aimed at people who want to party cheaply in the sun.

It doesn't take much research to find out which they are so you can go there if that's what you want. But they're only ever fairly small parts of the relevant island or region, so are also easy to avoid if that's not what you want. Even going a few miles away will give you a completely different holiday experience.

SpicePumpkin · 29/03/2022 13:46

There's plenty of nice places in Mallorca that aren't Magaluf. Deia, Soller, Valldemosa, Pollensa, Porto Christo, Santanyi, Arta, Cala Figuera etc Even Palma is lovely. I have family near Porto Christo. It's a very beautiful Island.
